A qualitative research methodology was employed to study the characteristics, causes, and cures of nominality in the African Church. Chapter one is on biblical pattern of missions demonstrated by Jesus.  The second is on the beginning and expansion of mission.  It zeroes in on the Sudan Interior Mission and its church denomination, the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA).  Chapter three is a report on the research, and four on training to cure nominality.  Chapter five discusses the content of training and six on the strategy of implementation.  The final chapter is on evaluation of training. Drawing on studies of national church-mission relations, case studies of attempts at transition, and the perceptions of African church leaders and missionaries, the project finds that abrupt transition that does not involve a preparatory dialogue between national church and mission is likely to be more hurtful than helpful. The uses the same instructors, entrance requirements, courses, and examinations in both programs. Student and instructor questionnaires were subjected to Chi-square, t-test analyses, and Aspin-Welch Unequal Variance t-test to measure felt equivalence. A survey of Christian doctrine written to address this need, with an emphasis on African problems, was published in 1992.  This study is an evaluation of the cultural relevance and the readability of that book in the opinion of the kind of secondary and post-secondary level African theological students who will likely use the book in the future.  The sixty-four participants in the evaluation were students from a Bible college and a seminary in Kenya and a Bible college and a seminary in Ethiopia.  The research sought answers to six research questions by investigating the response to two selected chapters in the book.  To get the information needed, the study used a written survey instrument and a focus discussion group at each test location.  A combined average of 77 percent rated the book as well contextualized. Five cross-cultural training principles provided the structure.  The exit phase stresses skills required for a cross-cultural ministry.  The entry phase equips the newcomers to adjust to their new environment and to achieve communicative competence. Methods and measurable results are included in the project. SIM International directed each area to revise its orientation program and state measurable objectives.
