With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. Using original sources, the author shows how a liberal 'vision,' above and beyond the 'modernism' of the times, contributed to an unprecedented level of church growth, individual enthusiasm, and social and political influence.  A significant factor was the large number of women ministers serving in Iowa in positions of power.
