The pastor of Union Baptist Church in Clarke County, Mississippi, is planning to launch Christian addiction-recovery ministries centered on weekday Celebrate Recovery [registered symbol] meetings. The ministries are collaborative works involving selected Chrsitians from Southern Baptist churches in the local Baptist associations. Phase two of these ministries include the addition of a rotating Friday night contemporary worship service at the same non-church locations where the weekday meetings will be held. Three goals are the foundation of this Doctor of Ministry equipping project. The first goal is to research addiction recovery in order to identify group facilitation skills. The second goal is to develop a curriculum to equip selected addiction-recovery ministry leaders in east Mississippi, in group facilitation skills. The third and final project goal is to equip selected addiction-recovery ministry leaders in east Mississippi, in group facilitation skills. The workship schedule consisted of nine sessions held on Thursdays with approval by the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) and the administration of MSP. The selected group consisted of thirteen IRAs, and each session lasted approximately two hours. The project director addressed the following pastoral issues: pastoral ministry skills, comfort and caring skills, anger management skills (two sessions), counseling skills, interpersonal relationship skills, listening skills, and suicide prevention skills before closing the workship with a final summary session. The project goals were to research the field of pastoral ministry skills, to develop teaching sessions to equip selected IRAs in pastoral minisrty skills, and to equip selected inmate religious assistants (IRAs) in pastoral ministry skills. The survey focused upon congregational perceptions and in particular what was important and driving the congregations at their inception. The historical research conducted to develop this paper included review of the documents of the Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Mississippi, the parish, the state of Mississippi, and the town of Yazoo City.  Interviews, both oral and written, were conducted with residents, former residents, and clergy in order to learn additional stories and to aid in the interpretation of other information.  The purpose of the project was to provide a permanent collection of stories about the history of God's people in the Episcopal Church in Yazoo County. The project director based the process on Hugh Townsend’s Set the Journey: a Strategy Development Model for Associations. The director enlisted a team composed of Baptist leaders – Both bivocational and fully-funded – from across the state. The primary goals of the process were to: (1) create a “Bivocational Pastors Profile,” (2) determine “best practices” within other state Baptist Conventions, (3) develop a finalized strategy, and (4) present the strategy to appropriate leadership for both approval and affirmation in order to proceed with implementation, albeit outside the scope of the actual project. The project relied on survey data and a professional strengths inventory together with focus groups composed of pastors and spouses at six regional Dialogue Dinners. The project is based on the ministry skill enhancement model. The project director researched the fields of expository preaching and biblical genre, focusing on six of the major genres of Scripture: narrative, poetry, wisdom literature, parable, epistles, and Revelation. Annotated bibliographies and reports on expository preaching and biblical genre were reviewed by Dr. Lewis Richerson and Dr. Steven Smith, experts in the fields of expository preaching and biblical genre. From the reports, rubrics were created to evaluate the sermon development process. The project director developed sermon structures, outlines, and manuscripts utilizing the knowledge gained from the research to structure the sermon according to the structure and genre of the text. The project director delivered six sermons to the congregation of Galilee First Baptist Church. Dr. Richerson and Dr. Smith evaluated the sermon structures, outlines, and sermon videos. The development process utilized a select group of leaders from the church. The final phase of the project was the presentation of the volunteer-leader training strategy to Highland Colony Baptist Church for approval. He taught a selected group using the domains of learning: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective.
