The positive approach adopted to examine this issue is through Appreciative Inquiry. Rather than trying to 'fix' a problem, this paper studies what is good in the current confirmation preparation program, discovering how those good elements can be improved, and the importance of community in retaining members. The writer evaluates materials recommended by James Kennedy's Evangelism Explosion, Campus Crusade for Christ, American Baptists, Southern Baptists, United Methodists, and those recommended by the three major Lutheran bodies.  He demonstrates that many of the materials recommended by non-Lutherans are consistent with the teachings of the confessions while some of the 'Lutheran' materials are not.
