The study discusses the traditional Chinese family-orientation and its continued influence in the values, attitudes and behavior of the English-educated, urban middle-class Singapore Chinese.  The introduction of Western cultural norms through the process of modernization was readily accepted as a basis for marriage and family life.  However, the continued influence of the traditional family-orientation was to be a significant cause of dysfunctional marriages among these couples. Through content analysis of source documents leadership patterns were identified in successive historical periods. Team leadership was found to be most relevant in contemporary, cosmopolitan Singapore.  It is both adaptable to Asian values and responsive to socio-economic factors affecting both the society and the Church.
