Absent fathers have had a destructive effect on the home and community.  It's important that African-American men understand and assume their roles as leaders in the home. Governmental programs to stem this destruction have failed to address the root issue. The clear declaration of the gospel changes people's hearts (1 Cor 1:21). Using a qualitative research method the dissertation proposes that effective churches: (1) accommodate the cultural traits of self-centered American individualism; and (2) correct these traits. It was anticipated that the selected churches would have: a professionally trained appointed leader and trained laypersons; a safe environment for hope and healing; a clear pathway for people to find help; and the churches would use both prepackaged and their own written programs/materials. The research method and design was a case study of these three churches using interviews, direct observations and documentation such as websites and print materials. The goal was to gather the best practices from these church ministries and prayerfully seek to directly apply various organizational and functional traits to Wildwood Community Church in Norman and in the surrounding areas. This research sought to discover how the selected churches structure and execute their care and counseling ministries. In addition, this research endeavored to learn new ways of incorporating staff and laypeople as leaders and workers in Wildwood's Care and Counseling Ministry. The project includes a literature search on the subject of 'mentoring', a survey of pastoral internship opportunities offered by a representative group of evangelical seminaries and graduate schools of theology, a comparative analysis of three local church internship programs similar to the effort at Blue Church, and detailed appraisals of the six internships already served at Blue Church, carried out by means of personal interviews with each former intern. This project is a case study of the Philadelphia Seeker Project, describing the planting of a church based on small groups designed to reach the unchurched.  The project devotes significant attention to the history, mission, vision, strategy, structure, values, and beliefs of the church. Since the goal of evangelism is seen as making disciples, the strategy places heavy emphasis on assimilating new believers into the local church.  Ten New Testament principles of evangelism form the basis for evaluating the three case studies as well as providing the theological orientation for the strategy.  The three-step strategy takes a chronological approach to the task of local church evangelism.
