More than 70,000 persons visited the church in 1995, and its varied use by community groups and agencies, its status on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, and its preparation to become a National Historic Landmark are indications that the 15 September 1963 bombing of the church has changed its ministry. The availability of guns, fueled by an ethos that it is an American right to bear arms, makes the land fertile for carnage of all sorts.  The African American community is the one community that seems to have more of its share of deaths by homicide.  The African American male is the one group that suffers from homicide in a staggering rate.  He is more likely to die from homicide between the ages of 15 and 44 than any other American group. This thesis-project not only affirms this position but offers a stewardship plan to undergird such a ministry.  The project asserts that black Americans whose ties are to both the First World and the Third World could best spearhead such a ministry through the church using a praxis suggested by the Home Missions Movement in America. Utilizing the objectives design method, a curriculum encompassing a stewardship plan with a global perspective was presented to and ratified by participants. The research methods used included a history of church and community, a neighborhood survey and an analysis of the church partnership between the two congregations, with an emphasis on race relations. The main parts of the funeral event such as the service, wake, the committal service, and the repast, are examined as powerful tools of evangelism. In addition, the importance of preaching, singing, and praying during the funeral event have been explored as additional spiritual tools for evangelism. The role of the pastor and laity are explored as care givers offering an open door of opportunity for being evangelists.
