This thesis-project explored the possibility that embracing a Christian identity can help second-generation Chinese American college students and young adults navigate the potential difficulties between their ethnic and national identities. To help participants embrace a Christian identity and apply it to their cultural identities, a 13-week lesson series, Between Two Worlds, structured around the categories of believing, being, belonging, and behaving, was implemented. Participants took initial and final surveys to evaluate the efficacy of the lesson series in establishing the necessity of a Christ-centered identity and in providing a mental framework for identity development."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://archive.org/details/between-two-worlds-thesis"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130291943768064,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:16.764Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:53:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:34:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"305f4c38-8b77-4ebf-a976-28e263a79499","accessControl_ssim":["7c26c9cf-3cac-409e-a06b-4b16d2c65b20"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Embodied Spiritual Practices for Brown and Black Bodies Exploring Sabbath Rest"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:53:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:32:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7f8a82d9-49dd-48cf-b09f-b28ce2bb20fc"],"hasLease_ssim":["f4b0ca86-f256-4bec-a368-6b77b1d99cd7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Spiritual Direction"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gennifer B. Working in collaboration with The Board of Young Peoples Ministry and the Hispanic /Latino Ministry of the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church, the retreat model was reviewed by the committees for use in the work of spiritual formation for Black and Latinx Young Adults. This trend is particularly strong with the generation known as 'Millennials,' where more than thirty-five percent reported that their religious affiliation is 'None.' This report has been widely reported on and has generated incredible anxiety in churches. While many in the church blame culture for a rapid decline of religious faith, it is the purpose of this thesis to show that one reason for the precipitous drop in religious identification in the United States is that the church has ceased to speak about God in a way that connects to the lived-experience of Millennials. If the gospel is going to spread in a post-Christian culture, then the church must learn to use variegated language to speak about how God is to be found in the world. This thesis uses the Five Theological Worlds from W. Paul Jones as a launching point to offer a better way to connect the lived-experience of Millennials to the way they understand how God works in the world. Six Millennials were chosen to participate in this project, which began with each individual taking the Theological Worlds Inventory. After completing the Inventory, participants took part in one-hour long experiences of each of the five Theological Worlds. After the completion of the experiences, they were invited to take the Theological Worlds Inventory for the second time, with the hope that any change in Theological World could be measured by their responses. Follow up interviews were done with each of the six participants with questions geared to measure how each of the experiences impacted their lived-experience and their theological understanding of how God is at work in their lives. There were also four people who acted as a control group."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://hdl.handle.net/10898/10087"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128530002640896,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:01:16.445Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:55:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dbb6460d-bb86-4c44-98d6-6ca76d9fb5b6","accessControl_ssim":["334811de-960d-4d81-beba-15348e3479d1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Towards a Holistic Education: Forging Integrative Approaches between Campus Ministers and Theology Faculty at Catholic Universities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:55:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:24:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7b210e4b-157b-411a-85bd-fe71a3831956"],"hasLease_ssim":["2b3500da-d746-417a-8ade-dc7431709541"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Practical Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward Foley Capuchin Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Like so many campus settings throughout the United States, the Christian community at DePaul is complicated, diverse, and marked distinctly by distrust, skepticism, and conflict between Christian students and between Christian groups on campus. This thesis-project posits that spiritual practices inherent in the Body of Christ might encourage and inspire Christian unity on campus. Spiritual practices that emerge through explorations of the experiences and hopes of college students, major global ecumenical movements, and early followers of Christ in Corinth will be considered as a means for developing a pastoral response to the issue of conflict and dissension among Christians on campus and beyond. A brief foray into faith developmental theory, Millennial and post-Millennial generational studies, and ethnocentricity also provide helpful insights. The Practical Theology method and model developed by Evelyn and James Whitehead guide this thesis-project as the work strives to shed light on ways in which koinonia might be realized among Christians within a contemporary higher education setting."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129476103405568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:16:18.718Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:47:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:01:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3a8c0f49-eb26-46cf-8bcb-105150aa7357","accessControl_ssim":["6842ecb7-0722-4ee6-ba7f-fd536ee7f08f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Unique way reaching the Nones and the Dones can happen"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:47:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:49:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["809f1a86-c5e8-4427-a17b-9fd39621a6b4"],"hasLease_ssim":["1e1d2cce-0dc4-4863-9299-e18f7411e3a6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lovett H Weems"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Through one on one discussions, surveys, and prayer the launch team created a paradigm so that people who were not engaged in a faith community would give 'church' a try and ultimately become engaged in a faith journey."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716389418696704,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:01:37.404Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:49:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:40:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"72d9abcb-65c2-4df6-b43e-d57c9e889ff1","accessControl_ssim":["03d6f0ac-241e-4dc2-9212-6dc008f688e3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'What happened?' and 'What now?': exploring how Reformed pastors minister to the parents of apostate emerging adults"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:49:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:29:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["67c54288-fc1b-4c67-aa1d-7c37f42f9829"],"hasLease_ssim":["5c6be98e-7361-4862-9ef4-954ba867890c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C John Collins"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joost Nixon"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Young adults--Religious life","Reformed Church","Christians","Theology, Practical","Non-church-affiliated people","Apostasy--Christianity","Church work with young adults"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to explore how Reformed pastors minister to the parents of prodigal emerging adult children. This study focused on three key areas that affect how pastors minister to the parents of apostate emerging adults: the religious lives of emerging adults, biblical and theological concerns regarding baptism, apostasy, and covenantal status of children, and policies churches have employed to minister to apostate young adults and their parents. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with Reformed pastors in the Northwestern United States. This study found that parents have a strong shaping influence on their children's religious faith, and that prevention through consistent reinforcement of covenantal indicatives and parental example is critical, and that redemptive solutions to apostate emerging adults must embrace the entire church community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130980512169984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:13.434Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:33:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"90405f3d-6c3b-416e-877b-9fd65161dde3","accessControl_ssim":["e22960ed-76ab-41a1-88cb-e4e36b8c0c82"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Addressing the needs of 'generation X' in a traditional church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:33:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:21:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d7dbf208-1094-4de8-afbe-8912889ef0d4"],"hasLease_ssim":["bc397cff-a2af-49a0-a46a-cee622e97a84"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["H Stanley Wood"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Perry C McCallen"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theologial Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Second Presbyterian Church (Chattanooga, Tenn)","Evangelistic work","Generation X","Church work with young adults"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus Christ issues the foundational charge to the Christian Church to make disciples.
