After studying the training of elders as described in the New Testament, tracing the history of theological education in the United States, and conducting case studies of some contemporary church-centered training programs, the author concluded that it is feasible for local churches to train pastors.  The hypothesis was tested in a training program conducted by the author at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon.  Five students were trained in hermeneutics and homiletics over a six-month period. Authors who had written on this subject in the past five years were consulted. The thesis also examined definitions and directions through a questionnaire mailed out to five hundred protestant churches representing three Lutheran 'evangelical' denominations.  The thesis was tested through the efforts of a lay ministry team.  This group arrived at a definition of lay ministry and implemented their ministry through several case studies which are presented. Using the original sources of their diaries, letters and published works, their own words are transposed from the written form onto the stage as two-act dramatic monologues. Two completed scripts are included in this work; they are the Fry and Stowe plays which have been performed before live audiences whose feedback is included (chapter 7) in the work and whose reactions informed the re-writing of the finished scripts. Those scripts, with historical introductions and study guides, comprise chapters 3 and 5 of the work.
