It describes how alcoholism is a shared disease, affecting not only the identified alcoholics but also the systems to which they belong. These adult-children of alcoholics have been left with psychological and physical scars.  This project draws on research in the field of alcoholism and adult-children and on personal experience. It seeks to define who the adult-child is; the dynamic and the effects of the alcoholic and the co-dependent spouse on the child; the myths, messages, rules and roles within the alcohlic family.  The latter part of the work presents the church as family.  It profiles the alcoholic priest who is an adult-child, the church's response to alcoholic clergy, the role of church authority and denial.  The project concludes with a series of questionnaires and proposals for the identification of and ministry to the priest who is also an alcoholic adult-child."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133063502102528,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:13:19.928Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:43:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:30:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ddf35a0e-fb61-4d20-a2f2-b32fcba2a186","accessControl_ssim":["7f8683f4-dc55-4283-aa9a-e6d4d5be7f0c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The clergy and chemical dependency: ministering to alcohol and drug related problems"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:43:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:29:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0adb45ff-8f97-4037-9d0e-97262c4a502f"],"hasLease_ssim":["4ce1f063-19a1-47f4-9f4f-d90daff5920b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Meredith Handspicker"],"year_tesim":["1985"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stephen P Apthorp"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Alcohol","Church and social problems","Theology, Practical","Alcoholism","Drug abuse","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is two-fold: first to explain that clergy do not have to be interested in the complexities of alcoholism and drug abuse to be effective pastors and second, to provide practical methods that will help the minister to be efficient in dealing with and preventing chemical problems. This project suggests a suitable role and a proven model the minister can use to promote a parish program of chemical health.  Acting as a catalyst, using the redemptive principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, the object is to enlist the enthusiasm of parishioners to create a fellowship where learning, sharing and growth can occur.  The unique feature is that three diagnostic instruments are provided to identify chemical dependency. The family of the alcoholic was seldom seen at the clinic on other than superficial levels; even such limited observation demonstrated a vicious circle of anxiety and frustration.  Parish ministers and family doctors often come in contact with alcoholism but fail to recognize it.  This paper defines alcoholism, the nature of the disease, the effect on the individual and his family and the social and economic cost of it for our nation. It focuses on the specific alcoholic and his history together with the growth of the disease, seeks to pinpoint causes with reference to its early growth in the family of reference and its fruition in the family of procreation, discusses alcoholic life patterns in the marriage relationship and its effects on the children.  Medical models, psychological models of Menninger, Blaine and Berne, and Sullivan, and a sociological model are presented, as well as the author's pastoral theological reflections on alcoholism re a Christian concept of person."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133942575792128,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:27:18.278Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":9,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Bruce Ashley Dyer","hits":1,"label":"Bruce Ashley Dyer"},{"value":"Charles Patrick Foley","hits":1,"label":"Charles Patrick Foley"},{"value":"Clayton L Knapp","hits":1,"label":"Clayton L Knapp"},{"value":"David I Donovan","hits":1,"label":"David I Donovan"},{"value":"Duane Kellogg","hits":1,"label":"Duane Kellogg"},{"value":"Mark Richard Lane","hits":1,"label":"Mark Richard Lane"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Pastoral counselors and clients","hits":1,"label":"Pastoral counselors and clients"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Alcohol","hits":9,"label":"Alcohol"},{"value":"Alcoholism","hits":9,"label":"Alcoholism"},{"value":"Church and social problems","hits":2,"label":"Church and social problems"},{"value":"Alcoholics Anonymous","hits":1,"label":"Alcoholics Anonymous"},{"value":"Case method","hits":1,"label":"Case method"},{"value":"Catholic Church","hits":1,"label":"Catholic Church"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":9,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":9,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":9,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1987","hits":2,"label":"1987"},{"value":"1988","hits":2,"label":"1988"},{"value":"1993","hits":2,"label":"1993"},{"value":"1982","hits":1,"label":"1982"},{"value":"1985","hits":1,"label":"1985"},{"value":"1989","hits":1,"label":"1989"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":9,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":9,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":9,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":9,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":9,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
