By comparing relationships between pastors and congregations to marriage, the project uses insights of couples therapy to develop a model of the relationship that lends itself to the process of termination.  Family theory defines the central role of the pastor in the termination process. Using grief studies and theories of attachment and separation, the project explores psychodynamics of loss for the pastor.  Biblical and theological resources explain separations that offer insight into the ways that clergy might conduct their terminations.  A case study using a composite of interviews tells the story of one termination. For fifteen years, American Baptist Churches have used a printed form,  'Church Self-Study of Goals and Leadership Needs', to aid this reflection process.  The purpose of this project was to rewrite the form for the American Baptist Personnel Services.  Information was gained from persons directly acquainted with the document.  These resources included search committees, executive ministers, area ministers and pastors.  Data from each participating group was gathered and analyzed to form the background for the new document of church reflection.  The new form discusses the disciplined and guided thought which takes place when a church deliberately looks at itself -- its being, belief, function and mission. Twenty-two key issues were identified by survey and used to design a program for ministry reflection groups meeting every three weeks. Three pilot groups (1982) and four test groups (1983) used the material.  Transition by the test ministers was compared with that of four contemporaries.  Further experiment with the program as part of an integrated approach to transition during the first three years after ordination is recommended.
