The project explores roles and expectations of motherhood as well as examining definitions of family.  It details the dilemmas for a mother who tries to parent when not physically present in her household; the dilemmas that she faces in confronting attitudes of judgment and prejudice; the dilemmas presented by feelings of guilt, rejection, and abandonment. After presenting the historical development of the Order and defining the charism of its founder, the thesis explores the faith development and spirituality of young adult males who comprise college councils. Contemporary ecclesiastical documents, particularly Vatican II's 'Decree on the laity,' are employed to provide a theological background and understanding of laity, their mission and need for empowerment.
