The project explores roles and expectations of motherhood as well as examining definitions of family.  It details the dilemmas for a mother who tries to parent when not physically present in her household; the dilemmas that she faces in confronting attitudes of judgment and prejudice; the dilemmas presented by feelings of guilt, rejection, and abandonment. Ethnicity is at the core of family functioning, structure, rules, roles, patterns, boundaries, mannerisms, issues, beliefs, and traditions; and that context is the definitive reality in which an individual's, family's  and the community's understanding of itself is created, maintained or changed.  The purpose of this project is to create a working model that will enable the helping professional become absorbed in the energy and relational forces that give ethnic families a distinctive quality of life and relationships. It uses this model for the pastoral assessment of congregational families with regard to life cycle issues.  The author hypothesizes that the model may be useful in identifying families who risk having difficulty with life cycle transitions and situational crises.  He shows how the family wellness program 'Understanding Us,' which is based on the circumplex model, can be a vehicle for such assessment.  The project presents a theological understanding of the model and of its application to pastoral ministry to
