Part I is an exegetical and psychological interpretation of the holistic, therapeutic wisdom of Mark 5:24-34. Part II reflects a new paradigmatic shift exploring the meaning of illness from medical, psychological and spiritual perspectives, recognizing that body and psyche are one. The paradoxical nature of illness can empower growth and heal the body/psyche split which has been impacted by reductionistic thinking. Comparisons are made between body therapy and analytical psychology. Experiential and caregiver dimensions of physical, emotional and spiritual understandings of illness meaning are examined."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133869500530688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:08.588Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:08:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:30:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dce7365a-ea90-44bd-95a7-8f38c1960903","accessControl_ssim":["87322e31-d258-45a4-92b6-e29ec3bb96da"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Health through hope: a systemic understanding of physical well-being"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:08:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:27:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b6e33b7b-8fce-48e4-ad8f-c2399fcf6689"],"hasLease_ssim":["2edfce38-f4af-47ed-a48b-be4e3f79685f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Brita L Gill-Austern"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ernest H Pettis"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Mind and body","Health","Hope"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis examines the impact of hope in the promotion of physical health. The relationship of mind to body and individual to family, together with the emotions of helplessness and hope are explored. The methodology employed was studying anecdotes and scientific research on the 'mind/body connection' and CPE verbatims compiled in hospital cancer wards, leading a bereavement support group, attending seminars on healing and on church and family systems, reading family system theorists' writings, pastoring a church, and reviewing theological essays on Christian hope. This research suggests that a discernable and direct relationship between physical health and hope exists. Additionally, the Christian pastor and church family can assume stances that promote physical health."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134119155990528,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:06.678Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:42:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:26:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a15fb47e-44a1-49a1-86d0-dc53a73d9c38","accessControl_ssim":["93f28270-f3df-403e-a982-a4838c829532"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Obsession and taboo: on free will, theology, and the search for artificial intelligence"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:42:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:50:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c6c19a8d-9655-4569-876e-4fd079431afd"],"hasLease_ssim":["f39b0c67-8563-46ca-ad62-8077b41b6932"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Meredith Handspicker"],"year_tesim":["1991"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["George J Koch"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Mind and body","Free will and determinism","Religion and science","Technology","Artificial intelligence"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The cutting edge of the 'computer revolution,' strong artificial intelligence (SAI), tries to answer two ancient theological questions: is there such a thing as free will? and, what is mind or soul? SAI has made a category mistake because it uses the wrong intellectual tool, science, to answer a theological question. Science is unwarranted to answer theological questions. Despite the claim that their work is 'value neutral,' proponents of SAI show their values as they attempt to answer these theological questions. A dialogue between those working in SAI and theologians needs to be established. Both have something to bring to the discussion of these theological questions."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133873646600192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:12.541Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:52:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b46cb9fc-0957-4128-ae97-3670cfdc9e08","accessControl_ssim":["5747ccef-64d8-47c1-a9bb-a0a07366d6aa"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Spiritual therapy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:52:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:20:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["25b97549-399b-48af-8203-24ae9ec1590d"],"hasLease_ssim":["097432c2-fad8-4bb9-b972-edca11781490"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1988"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Donna D Keane"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Mind and body","Swedenborg, Emanuel, 1688-1772","Pastoral counseling","Psychotherapy","Jung, C. Both men use a process approach to human psychodynamics of growth and change. Their models of the structure of the human mind foster the inclusion of God in the therapeutic setting. Both theories use dreams, journal keeping, active imagination and dialogue with spirits and archetypes to achieve their goals.
