These images appear to arise from the unconscious as primitive mythological motifs. The author calls their projection the 'ordaining' phenomenon. When it occurs the event raises many issues: what triggers it? What is its scope? What are its implications for healing and growth? What are the symbols and archetypal images that constellate and to what processes do they point? Are they positive or negative? Do they enhance or restrict the counseling process? Finally, how can the pastoral counselor make use of these insights in the peculiar ministry of pastoral counseling? The myths function as neurotic defenses for the counselee. For this reason the task of pastoral counseling is described as a demythologizing."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133451638800384,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:30.084Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:06:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:15:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"26da763f-bb8b-4038-8eb2-faf3364e0c5d","accessControl_ssim":["9c1bd686-b15b-46f5-ae1e-21dbaa7fd14f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral psychotherapy as an approach to the mysterium tremendum"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:16:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["90429d5f-f13d-4f71-8802-cbfa255dd683"],"hasLease_ssim":["e1dbcbe5-1fed-478b-95b6-b7acc6e5cef1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carl L Shesler"],"keyword_tesim":["Individuation","Psyche","Other, The"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral psychology","Alienation (Social psychology)","Psychotherapy","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project discusses pastoral psychotherapy as an approach to the numinous, symbol-making and self-healing potential of the psyche. The beginning point of the study is the psychological and spiritual suffering of the alienated psyche in the archetypal wasteland, a painful condition in which the individual feels separated and alienated from his or her own unconscious depths, from other people in human community, and from a seemingly destructive and unavailable God. This archetypal experience is viewed as the a priori condition for the healing of psyche and soul, a transformation which occurs through the establishment of a redeeming link with an infinite source of wisdom, guidance and blessing called, variously, the self-archetype or the greater personality in psychological language, or the mysterium tremendum or wholly other in theological language. The basic assumption of this study is that there is a religious instinct or drive within the psyche which mediates the contents of the objective psyche to the individual through images which disclose the symbolic meaning of events, reconcile opposites, and promote the individuation process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133189847121920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:20.420Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:17:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3a303040-baf9-4081-afc2-5357d1f4564e","accessControl_ssim":["4fca0262-4c08-4cc4-ac85-bf6000106c6d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Feminine psychology and pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:49:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["700b02a7-6e9d-452b-91f3-d2ff039b8492"],"hasLease_ssim":["d300031c-ff54-4a49-b6b3-e445c975abbc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["J Earl Thompson"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Craig Ballard Millett"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Women and religion","Theology","Pastoral counseling","Psychology","Women"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project looks at four major theories used to describe a psychology of women, and then outlines the theological presuppositions behind each one of the four. Using the concept of 'levels of truth' from Anne Wilson Schaef's book, Women's Reality, as the organizational backbone, three levels of relationships are addressed. Level one outlines the congruent interface between psychotherapy and spiritual direction where emotional needs and the spiritual search are one in the same. Level two outlines the incongruent areas where both disciplines stand in a relationship of tension. Four areas are explored: awakened consciousness, ego-negation, self-knowledge, and discernment. The bridge building chapter integrates the theory of Winnicott, Rizzuto, and Meissner with the thinking of Needleman, Edwards and Jones. Level three is a synthesis of both disciplines. The common meeting ground is in Winnicott's 'potential space'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133371019034625,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:13.199Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"594817c1-d605-4e90-aaef-7643e9264653","accessControl_ssim":["406a4e64-335a-46a4-8b74-895fd4d9ba10"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Redemptive meaning of suffering and death"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:45:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["984c30eb-861d-46af-a00a-1183b9933b59"],"hasLease_ssim":["dc2bf8c4-ba39-490a-8f28-0b421bc2d81e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mary Gemma Neville"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Death--Religious aspects--Christianity","Suffering--Biblical teaching","Jung, C. The themes throughout this paper are suffering, death, salvation, redemption, and resurrection. These are followed historically in the Old and New Testaments. Suffering in the OT is thought of variously as a punishment by God, an an educative process, as suffering caused by evil, etc. In the NT these views of suffering are modified in the light of Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection. Resurrection to life in the spirit completes the victory over suffering, sin, and death. The third and fourth chapters deal with these themes from a psychological perspective using the ideas of Jung and Frankl. Frankl's emphasis is the importance of finding meaning in suffering; Jung emphasizes the creative use of suffering. Chapter five is a theological perspective on the pain of God and our human dilemma. Shared suffering is important, and God shares our suffering. In the final chapter I have integrated suffering, death, and resurrection into my ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133510973521920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:26.670Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-10T21:37:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bc01da55-04c4-49b7-9140-a0a8e9f089a6","accessControl_ssim":["81df1528-6b4e-437e-98e2-cdbe2166d9fd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The people of God and the experience of alienation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-10T21:37:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3f165625-f13e-42ac-9ba1-77cc2b04fac2"],"hasLease_ssim":["4c1b4dea-ad96-4b80-8b31-c098951022b9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael R Nagle"],"keyword_tesim":["Laity Concerned"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Vatican Council","Alienation (Social psychology)","Pastoral psychology","Decretum de instrumentis communicationis socialis (Vatican Council)","Jung, C. The method of research is historical and begins with a survey of some literature regarding the origins of consciousness from the unconscious. A study of the human personality according to C G Jung is presented to provide a framework for describing the dynamics of the human personality, conscious and unconscious. A chapter on dreams, symbols and religious experience locates their origins in the unconscious and studies their significance for personal and spiritual development. A brief history of western Christian spirituality is surveyed, indicating a reverence for the unconscious as a source of spiritual growth and personal integration. The spiritual journey foster s a symbolic level of consciousness in order to attach a symbolic meaning to religion, scripture, church, dogma and ritual. This is the foundation for Christian spirituality as the twenty-first century approaches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133399291789313,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:40.162Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:24:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8a841341-5435-4cba-b745-836a8eb2fb19","accessControl_ssim":["ca9c6bf2-30ac-45c9-8746-6779a52fb1bd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The spirituality of the minister: a focus for an advanced practicum in field education"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:11:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d2d11d27-0189-4546-b58c-3ade0e6643c2"],"hasLease_ssim":["052fb5c6-5c8b-4b42-9d85-b29577899e35"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Maria Harris"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ann Thérèse Johnson"],"keyword_tesim":["Theological seminaries--Fieldwork--Supervision"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Theological seminaries","Practicums","Spiritual formation","Seminarians--Religious life","Supervision"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["For this project, two advanced practica were conducted at Andover Newton Theological School.
