The ministerial relationship is identified as the locus of these difficulties and as the essential tool of the trade in ministry. Relational patterns in the interactions of misconducting predecessors are shown to generate a process by which the integrity of ministerial relationships deteriorates rendering subsequent ministries predictably difficult. Drawing on relational theory and studies of effective ministers, a model of relational competence is constructed and an ethical standard articulated. Accompanying essays struggle with whether short fiction might rise to the level of what Reformed theology will call the Word of God proclaimed. Exploring play's potential, this study asks: can play effect one's ability to car for others and oneself by stimulating new perceptions and capacities that foster individual and communal wholeness? Five capacities of play, befriending one's body, engaging the inner child, expressing feeling, developing spontaneity, and opening perceptive innocence, are investigated. Using Relational Cultural Theory and Behavioral Medicine a qualitative case study explores play as care, adapting transitional space into 'formative space of play' utilizing InterPlay. An integral part of this effort was a discussion of the development of the theology behind this response and the evolution of modern theology in response to the social and political situation in Guatemala.  The author contends that the Catholic Church underwent a substantive change in the last forty years in how it responded in Guatemala.
