The goal of Lutheran preaching is defined as letting hearers encounter Christ so that they are strengthened for faith and discipleship.  Four pastors took part in one-day preaching workshop in which the importance of the preacher's self-image was introduced and explained.  Each pastor agreed to preach a sermon series in which self-image was at the forefront of his mind. The paper is structured around an introduction, five chapters, and an appendix.  The project involved teaching a brief history of lay preaching, an operative theology of preaching, communication skills from a theological and cultural perspective, and the Historical-Grammatical Method of biblical interpretation along with a sample of current, compatible hermeneutical trends.
