The content of the seminary focused on excellence and quality in local church ministry. Surveys were used to measure the effectiveness on a church receiving the training and compare it to one which did not receive the training. Regular attenders, local ministry leaders, and guests participated in the survey process. The issues of excellence, quality, and customer service in both the corporate and church worlds were examined in literature as a background for the study. The research team developed a survey to assess the presence of eight health characteristics: intentional evangelism, mobilized laity, transforming discipleship, engaging worship, passionate spirituality, empowering leadership, authentic community, and effective structures. The health was then compared to particular indices of growth. A positive relationship between health and growth was discovered. Five small groups participated in a ten-month program of spiritual formation using John Wesley's 'band' model.  A questionnaire was administered to the small groups and the rest of the congregation before and after the program.  The small groups experienced significannt spiritual renewal but the remainder of the congregation did not. Prior to my arrival, the church leadership had decided to embark upon a period of strategic planning in order to evaluate its ministries and set future direction.  The church leadership and I decided to work together in a collaborative strategic planning process, which we termed ReVision, to improve church health and stimulate church growth.  We decided to use the approach to church life and health called Natural Church Development (NCD) as the primary model and description of church health. The project at Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church involved the administration of the NCD survey on three occasions--before my arrival as the new senior pastor and the commencement of the strategic planning process, three months after my arrival and still before the formal commencement of the strategic planning process, and eighteen months after my arrival, which was fifteen months into the strategic planning process.  Following the release of the results of the third NCD survey, the members of the ReVision Taskforce were given a survey containing four open-ended questions intended to allow them to reflect on the planning process and the congregation's health changes. The study utilized a case study approach describing the church planting programs of five similarly sized denominations, the statistical records for new congregations started in 1993 and 1994, and interviews with church planters,  denominational leaders, and outside consultants. The NCD approach evaluated eight quality characteristics, advocating the use of the church's identified strength to build up its least- developed characteristic.  The research involved three administrations of the NCD survey.  The church's health index rose from thirty-eight to fifty-one on a scale of one to one hundred. Interviews revealed benefits in the process.
