Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. The Bible, prayer, Holy Communion, Christian conferencing, and fasting are still basics for personal spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134140750364672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:27.271Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:41:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f74a8a14-0335-44ec-b45f-48646f0cace6","accessControl_ssim":["cf2c4977-41e3-4390-ba3c-4ea6310ac0dd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Factors leading visionary entrepreneurial laity to start a new ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:12:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9ac2c7b5-d8d1-476b-a1a4-eb49676ab859"],"hasLease_ssim":["b18a9aec-4f0f-43fb-b087-bb98c2e0d2df"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joel B Green"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Andrew J Cooney"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Vocation","Lay Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare behaviors, contextual factors, and personal traits that lead visionary entrepreneurial laity to start a new ministry. Assimilation is dependent, however, upon the clergy staff having the time required to train, equip, and mentor the laity. Additional time can be gained by implementing a lay congregational care system. This system will ensure that all persons in the congregation will be prayed for daily; contacted weekly; will have a person available for nurture and care in times of crisis; and will be in contact with a person who will be an example of God's grace and the church's love. By utilizing this army of volunteers who are gifted in the area of care and nurture, the clergy staff can equip the saints for ministry. Equipping will be achieved through time spent in a mentoring relationship. During this time every effort will be made to help each person identify their spiritual gifts. Once these gifts are identified, one's passion will come to life and one's calling will become clear. A pretest, posttest survey was used to help determine if the care received helped to bring about the other objectives. These scores did indeed prove to be acceptable.
