Through guided interviews and assessment grids, I have discovered that churches, even older churches, may see God working through them as they examine their stories. By sharing these stories and recognizing their signs and symptoms, they can come a better understanding of themselves, their identity, and their mission. A survey of the Deacons and newer members of the congregation, along with research in mentoring and assimilation, provided materials to the Deacons to design and oversee the program in the congregation. Results demonstrated that family ties and denominational loyalty are not enough. New members need supportive and caring relationships to stay connected to the local church. Those without relationships tended to become inactive or move to another congregation. Lectures and discussion centered upon PowerPoint presentations. Other activities included a banquet, a race literacy quiz and an evaluation questionnaire. Seven minority members and six Caucasian pastors evaluated the seminar. The strongest rated aspect of the seminar was the scriptural foundation it provided for effective cross-cultural ministry. The seminar was rated least effective in reducing pastors' apprehensions about ministering to minority newcomers. Faculty, staff, and administration are inundated with schedules, assignments and time restraints that make it challenging to pursue community life; among each other as well as the community at large which includes the student body. The project focused on the work of an international small group whose purpose was to enhance community life at the seminary. The six group meetings included instruction in the spiritual disciplines of lectio divina, journal keeping and prayer; Bible study of Haggai; corporate prayer; and personal reflection. Fifteen participants in two groups (ten women and five men) ranged in age from twenties to eighties. Group participants demonstrated increased understanding and practice of spiritual disciplines, increased desire for involvement in spiritual community and increased frequency of prayer. This project developed a manual for use by a Mutual Ministry Committee. Eight people from the Great Lakes District Council of the Central Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church evaluated the manual. The curriculum designed for this project was a vital component of the institutional disciple-making efforts of the Memorial Church of Christ (Livonia, MI), a congregation firmly committed to the vision and values of the Restoration Movement (also known as the Stone-Campbell Movement).
