Methods of formation and application include using inventories and assessments; exploring resources, studies, and guides to practices in retreat settings; weekly communication (including journal entries) between participants and peer mentor; committing to Sabbath-keeping, developing a Rule of Life, and formulating a strategy for investing in the lives of student leaders. The goal was to craft a rough draft statement of the church's purpose, mission, vision, and core values. This research showed integrating leadership and preaching facilitates pastors leading a congregation. A control group made up of core leadership was surveyed with an instrument designed to measure the group's ability to listen and comprehend a sermon. The same instrument measured the group's level of leadership awareness. The project director conducted a literature research exploring the historical, cultural, and theological roots of deaf Americans and the causes of relational distance between deaf and hearing congregants. The project director provided cultural and relational training for selected participants and then volunteers developed relationships with members of the opposite culture. Data collected from a quantitative survey of pre- and post- statements explored relational attitudes concerning personal views within deaf/hearing relationships. The objectives of this ministry project were approached by examination of seven pastors and their ministry in the areas of vision, pastoral effectiveness, leadership, and communication.  The project director recruited, trained and coached the pastors and their boards, and evaluated the project. The congregation participated in a seven-week course on corporate prayer. Through surveys and a filmed group evaluation, the project director was able to assess the effectiveness of the project. The project's scope was to lead parishioners in a survey of the AME Church's doctrines, discipline, and membership responsibility. Participants were engaged through a series of eight seminars, four sermons, and a retreat. They averaged fifty-minutes in eight seminars, twenty-five minutes listening to four sermons, and forty-five minute sessions in the one half-day retreat. Evaluation instruments were administered for assessing the project director's effectiveness, participants' retention, and value of the material.
