It is based on perceptions that indicate a lack of understanding each holds of the other.  Military chaplains are often perceived as not being fully in the ministry, while executive ministers have often not kept in contact with chaplains.  The chaplains experience a sense of frustration when church structures are not responsive to their desire to maintain active involvement. A questionnaire was sent to United Methodist chaplains who had retired between the years 1975-1980 with a high level of response.  The instrument sought information about the past life pattern of the respondent and whether the person desired to return to ministry and was successful. Questions were raised concerning difficulties experienced in placement and in the role the Commission of Chaplains and Related Ministries of the UMC played in the process. The research employed a descriptive/historical research design to obtain self-reported observations to open-end variable in a 'command' approved 'Hymnal Revision Questionnaire.' A review of the literature on (1) Generation X and their spiritual and religious needs (2) pastoral ministry to this population, and (3) ministry in military was completed.  Qualitative data on the needs of this population was gathered in discussion groups of Generation X personnel in the Air Force.
