The method which this project follows is experiential and mystagogical.  The project concludes that significant growth in spiritual formation can and does take place in the worship service. Second, initial responses of long-time members differed significantly from initial resonses of 'beginners in faith'. Third, lay leaders often carry leadership burdens which sometimes hinder their ability to participate fully in worship.  Fourth, the person of the pastor plays a large role in the spiritual formation of the congregation. It reflects on the verbal and nonverbal dialogue of the preaching event in a small group setting.  The project addresses the sense of alienation, observed in the nonverbal dialogue of the preaching event, that occurs between the congregation and the sermon, the Gospel and the scripture. The study consists of a review of pertinent literature in the field of preaching, an examination of taped and published sermons, interviews with colleagues and four sessions with a committee of laypersons.  The study results in a set of guidelines for pastors on the use of personal material in sermons.  A committee of laypersons evaluates the initial guidelines with respect to clarity, organization and face validity.
