Many people have been seeking the Christian faith after obtaining religious freedom.  In today's China, thousands of people receive baptism without proper instruction about Church teaching and practice.  As a result, only a small number remain faithful to their baptismal commitment.  In considering today's new situation, I conducted interviews with catechists who have had experience working on this program in the diocese.  I think the Catholic Church in China faces two critical issues: 1) inadequate preparation for those who wish to be baptized, and 2) inadequate ongoing faith formation and communal support for those who have been baptized... The thesis draws on the conviction that remembering will play a significant part in the grief process and will make it possible to hope.  If such is the case, then our funeral rituals must provide environments of care in which remembering within the context of the Christian story might take place. The conclusion reached is that an imaginative use of the Order of Christian Funerals does indeed offer scope for remembering. The Rite envisions, during the Period of the Catechumenate, a kind of apprenticeship for catechumens and candidates, focusing on instruction, prayer, community and formation in apostolic activity. This thesis project focuses on three parishes with three very different approaches to the Period of the Catechumenate.
