Within our current social climate, it is interesting to consider the effects that digital technology has had on a traditional religion like Catholicism. Indeed, scholars and religious followers collectively acknowledge that digital technology provides great opportunities for the institution and its followers while simultaneously realizing the challenges of being present online. It is argued that today digital communication technologies are not just tools for communication, but a comprehensive, thought-shaping, and culture-making reality of our time. Therefore, this study explores the development of a praxis of digital faith formation for young adults. In this perspective, it examines first, the specific forms of digital religious expressions take in general and in Roman Catholic ministerial praxes in particular, especially in an Indian context. Second, how can Indian Roman Catholic ministers, and the faithful whom they serve, be evangelically and technologically informed, engaged, and responsible users of rapidly evolving digital media? Third, how can ecclesial leaders be effectively persuaded of the importance of being open to new ideas about the use of digital media for the formation of youth as well as a myriad of other possible ministerial applications? While exploring these questions in an Indian context, this thesis analyzes a set of specific phenomena related to both the existent and potential interplay of ministry and digital technology. This thesis takes a modest but important step toward developing digital faith formation for young adults. The country exists deeply rooted in religious tension and ethnic conflict. In these unstable times, some of the religious leaders and politicians are barriers to democratic transition and peaceful coexistence. In response, this thesis explores a prophetic witness of social justice in the light of the Praxis Model, a theological method of Professor Stephen B. Bevans. First, the conditions of social-religious-political injustices are examined to explain what led the country into chaos, corruption, and civil war. Then, this thesis proposes using effective, practical methods for moral and social transformation. Rather than promoting interreligious dialogue focused on doctrines that have divided people, this thesis recommends uniting people through involvement in social service activities that create common understanding and mutuality. Despite the many important complexities and nuances of sophisticated theologies of inculturation, what it refers to is simply an ideal for how the Gospel of Jesus Christ transforms the human family. It refers to a mode of evangelization by which specific cultures avails themselves to the Church, and the Church to specific cultures, for a mutually enriching dialogue in which nothing that is truly good and holy is at lost. Unfortunately, the history of Christianity is littered with the tragic results of various processes of confrontation and domination (particularly of the colonial sort) masquerading as evangelization, but actually profoundly at odds with the inculturative model of Christ. Far from providing for a holistic and authentically “holy” union of universal Gospel and local culture, these processes have created what, in many instances, have been unnecessary rifts and even hostilities between what is perceived as “Gospel” and what is perceived as “culture.” This thesis project is aimed at exploring the phenomenon of Mmanwu, an indigenous Igbo religious institution which has for centuries been at the center of what might be referred to as one of the many examples of both the misadventures of inculturation gone wrong in Nigeria and the pregnant possibilities of inculturation done properly.
