The researcher defines a properly functioning congregation as a thriving congregation, which meets its goals in various areas of its life.  Churches that fail to thrive need to look for the barriers that prevent them from accomplishing this goal.  This study is an effort to find the barriers in two churches in western Indiana by means of interviews, surveys, observation of groups within the churches, and from statistical records. The author researched the life of Ignatius, and the text of the Exercises to understand the origin and function of the meditations.  She used a survey of exercitants to indicate the breadth of the problem.  The author used faith stage development theory as a framework to bridge the Exercises from the 16th to the 21st century.
