An aspect of that polity is autonomy that declares each local Baptist church is a self-governing entity. In this context, lay authority has the potential to be misused and the laity can deselect a pastor at their will. This project, a case study is the presentation of a church to show how the call system works from candidacy to deselection. This study calls for an additional layer of pastoral oversight and recommends that pastors lead Baptist laity in securing pastors. The problem addressed by this project is imbalance in power and authority held by Baptist laity and manifested in the call system. Finally, a new plan is presented for receiving a pastor that is led by a Board of Pastors, which restores balance, and is built on a theological/biblical paradigm that indicates that God gives and sends pastors that are received by a congregation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132268257869824,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:41.524Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:22:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:52:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"24caef77-a83e-4c70-9a9d-c0194f1145ab","accessControl_ssim":["470a877d-ad96-4936-90d3-77159685e8c2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An educational model of pastoral care to support racial and ethnic diversity in Unitarian Universalist congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:22:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:13:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8286e83-bc28-4288-bea8-44b13383975f"],"hasLease_ssim":["2b50f7dd-3ce8-485c-8566-744dbf97373c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Kathleen J Greider"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Monica L Cummings"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Race relations","Unitarian Universalist Association","Ethnicity","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Unitarian Universalism has a long history of working for social justice in the United States. The approach used to bring about justice has been in the form of protests, political activism and writing political representatives. However, Unitarian Universalism has not intentionally focused on the pastoral care needs of people in their congregations who are most wounded by injustice. This project describes an intentional approach to cross-cultural pastoral care that employs a new integrated multifactorial assessment model to support racial and ethnic diversity in Unitarian Universalist congregations, by calling attention to the significance of culture on the identity formation of individuals who are labeled by the dominant culture as minorities. Additionally, the project encourages Unitarian Universalist ministers and religious educators when providing pastoral care to consider the history, family, culture and religious/theological issues that inform, nurture and sustain Unitarian Universalists who identify themselves as persons of color or members of an ethnic minority group in the United States."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131757884473344,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:34.794Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:22:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:52:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"24ec7085-7ea7-4647-80a6-9505c4371101","accessControl_ssim":["600d746d-bd2b-4ca8-8280-451877e17be3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The teaching ministry of the church: a guide for pastors in preparing candidate for baptism and confirmation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:22:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:13:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7257bcea-16b9-4131-a293-0ed645950a12"],"hasLease_ssim":["19cbb24f-5677-48c5-9d02-b67e5b2e22f9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Frank Rogers"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"location_tesim":["Zimbabwe"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gift Kudakwashe Machinga"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Clergy--Office","Church history","Baptism--Methodist Church","Confirmation--Methodist Church","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project addresses problems of the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe that have been created by a shortage of Christian education resources, both human and material. The Zimbabwean United Methodist Church is continuing to experience considerable numerical and spiritual growth. However, pastors do not have educational resources which are adequate to train new members and mature old ones. The preparation of candidates for baptism and confirmation is identified as a critical need and the project focuses on developing materials to be used by pastors in this preparation. The intent is to equip pastors with teaching strategies and tools (rather than lesson plans), and material is compiled from historical and biblical perspectives. Resources utilized include conversations with district superintendents and pastors, surveys of church members, and archival material accessed in Zimbabwe. The goal is to encourage pastors and draw them to embrace teaching in their ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131761579655168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:38.318Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:35:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:55:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6a5b250b-05fb-4b95-b9e0-5ed03c639d08","accessControl_ssim":["271f00c9-2b97-43dd-b737-73b124c722d9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Engaging cultural differences in ministry: a study on the cross-racial/cross-cultural ministry in the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:35:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:14:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1d45d475-a23e-4e91-b01f-a68ec80578b4"],"hasLease_ssim":["fe61be2a-c180-4f47-90f9-864fad077e14"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["William M Clements"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Yongwan Kim"],"keyword_tesim":["Clergy--Office--Emerging forms"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Race relations","Cross-cultural counseling","Pastoral counseling","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author critically examined issues in cross-racial/cross-cultural ministry such as clergy's perceptions of feelings of inadequacy, isolation, negativity, racism, and lack of support and connectedness caused by racial and cultural differences between the clergy and the congregations to which the clergy were appointed to serve. Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures.
