This project focused on a group of preachers who gathered to engage scripture in creative ways and then to continue practices individually. The author explored ways in which intentionally making time for spiritual practices affects the preacher as well as the sermon. The research involved a twelve-week study of a lectionary group of preachers, interviews of numerous preachers outside the group, and journal entries. Contemporary Christian loss of mythic, metaphorical thought patterns in favor of literal, rationalistic ways of thinking threatens the survival of the people of God and divests the Scriptures of their power to transform. The project uses secular story and biblical story in a 'sandwich' technique borrowed from the Gospel of Mark in order to restore an imaginative, metaphorical perspective to Christian consciousness so that biblical narrative can be reclaimed as story.
