Unlike any other institution in society, the church is called by its foundational scripture and theological convictions to be brother and sister to those in need. This report explores how the contemporary church responds to this call. Against a backdrop of opinions and perspectives on poverty, the report proposes a renewed commitment to the radical compassion for the poor manifested by Jesus Christ in his teachings and life. In this qualitative study of one particular congregation, the vital relationship between the praxis of evangelism and how we understand Christian identity will be examined.  A brief survey in the Gospel narratives will be offered to observe the role of Jesus' identity in his ministry and evangelistic witness.  A theological review of the modern reductionism of the gospel and the praxis of evangelism in North America will lead toward a renewed biblical framework for each, rooted in the reign of God. Using his highly acclaimed novel Silence, and his smaller work  A Life of Jesus, I convened a small reading group that engaged these literary texts specifically to challenge their images of Jesus. This paper focuses on the recovery of soul and on the care of souls in the practice of pastoral care and counseling.  Research focuses on the depth psychology of Carl Gustav Jung and the gospel of John.  A comparison is made between the Self, the central archetype in the psychology of Carl Jung, and the Christ presented in archetypal symbols in John.  Both address the creative, dynamic, unifying center of personality; Jung does so in psychological language, John in theological/christological language. In this crisis an answer is demanded to the question, 'Was my life worthwhile?' The following two focus points are crucial to a positive response to the above question. First, the approach used by Thomas Groome referred to as 'story-telling' and 'creative imagination' will be explored with George Stroup's use of biblical narratives for helping older adults in making meaning in their lives.
