The heaviest criticisms are levied by those interested in 'missional' church practices. This project engages in an intentional study of mission trips through the growingly influential lens of missional theology. This project focused on a congregation in transition. The author explored the use of resources from the 'missional church' conversation. She used the 'Three Zone Model of Missional Leadership' and 'The Missional Change Model' by Roxburgh and Romanuk in a process of participatory action research. Attention was paid to the role that renewal of baptismal identity and worship play in helping a congregation transition toward missional identity. Worship is one aspect of congregational life where the values of Western secular culture are deeply embedded; changing the expectations surrounding worship may be pivotal for the deeper transformation of congregational culture from an inward, institution-maintaining focus to an outward, missional orientation. This project is a case study of one congregation where such transformation is already underway. The concept of spiritual deep listening is viewed through the framework of the church history, family ties and in acts of worship through song, prayer, the preached word, as wellas acts of outreach. The concept of the beloved community expressed by Dr. Martin Luther King provides the theoretical framework for viewing the hteology of community expressed at Calvary United Methodist Church as the members struggle to listen to one another, the neighborhood, and the larger community. The research technoques used include observations, workshops and interviews with congregants. Data was also collected using a questionaire designed to sample the congregation for their growth in understanding the concept of listening deeply like Jesus. The result of this project has been an embracing of the active listening model in the communications among church members at Calvary United Methodist Church. In this qualitative study of one particular congregation, the vital relationship between the praxis of evangelism and how we understand Christian identity will be examined.  A brief survey in the Gospel narratives will be offered to observe the role of Jesus' identity in his ministry and evangelistic witness.  A theological review of the modern reductionism of the gospel and the praxis of evangelism in North America will lead toward a renewed biblical framework for each, rooted in the reign of God. Through a four-week Bible study exploring missional themes and a survey, participants in the study were asked to reflect on how their involvement in the life of the congregation shaped their perceptions. Nine pastors were surveyed and interviewed to discern their theological visions and leadership strategies in light of a theology which sees God's church sent on a mission. The research discloses that leadership factors include a passionate outreach oriented vision that is cast in a way which embeds the vision in the culture of the growing congregation.
