One way for churches to help in Christian identity formation is through the practice of testimony, when members share their faith stories to encourage and nurture one another. This report briefly explores Christian identity formation in the twenty-first century along with the understanding of testimony in the Bible and church history. Then it details how one congregation has begun the practice of testimony, with members sharing faith stories in worship. Through narrative, people come to understand their identity, who they are as children of God and as members of the community of faith. It is largely through the narratives of the Bible that God discloses God's self, thus bringing the light of revelation to people. Similarly, it is through the narratives of the New Testament that we come to understand who and what Jesus Christ is, our christology. Also our ethics are greatly affected because the decisions we make and the actions we take are both greatly dependent on our sense of belonging to a community that upholds the moral and ethical standards known through biblical narratives. Recognizing the tremendous power of narrative in all of these areas and psychological areas as well, it would seem that narrative sermons hold a great potential to help church members move in positive directions both theologically and psychologically and hence spiritually. Therefore the act of ministry for this dissertation is the preaching of narrative sermons and the evaluation of the effectiveness of these sermons. First, the approach used by Thomas Groome referred to as 'story-telling' and 'creative imagination' will be explored with George Stroup's use of biblical narratives for helping older adults in making meaning in their lives.
