The thesis of this project is that scripture memory and recitation within public worship can provide pastors of mainline congregations a way to facilitate fresh encounters with scripture as a living word. Using ethnographic listening practices, the study investigates the effect of scripture recitation as a form of proclamation in one mainline protestant congregation over the course of two years. Using the basic qualitative research method, the author interviewed middle-aged men and women and young adults to ascertain how they made sense of childhood experiences of death and how that affected their current attitudes toward death. She concluded that many lack the ability to talk about death and how to prepare for it, and that to die well, one must live well. This report explores executive coaching theory, considering how working with a coach can help a pastor out of a rut and thus regain energy for ministry. Throughout Christian history, we can say that some sacrificial deaths, those that derive from love of both God and others, bear fruit. This study aims to examine how such deaths resulted in the expansion of Christian mission by surveying the legacies of four missionaries from four Presbyterian churches who died suddenly in the line of duty. Those missionaries are John W. Heron of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Lottie Witherspoon Bell of the Presbyterian Church of the United States, William J. McKenzie of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, and Joseph Henry Davies of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, Australia.I will briefly ascertain the afore-mentioned missionaries' motivations for mission to Korea, and the process that carried them from the start to the end of their mission. Then, I will focus on the interplay between their deaths and their influence in both Korean Christianity and Western Christianities as a case study in World Christianity by investigating the activities of remaining family members, colleagues, natives, and their home churches. In order to clarify why their deaths had such a deep impact, I will particularly delve into the influence of deaths as a social phenomenon through the theology of premillennialism to which Western missionaries subscribed. The thesis of this project is that Scripture memory and recitation within public worship can provide pastors of mainline congregations a way to facilitate fresh encounters with Scripture as a living Word. Using ethnographic listening practices, the study investigates the effect of Scripture recitation as a form of proclamation in one mainline Protestant congregation over the course of two years.
