While Sunday, the day of resurrection, has always been the primary focus and the most ideal day for the church to gather around the Word and Sacraments, this central activity of the church is not limited to that singular day. As the Large Catechism makes clear “Truly, we Christians ought to make every day such a holy day and devote ourselves only to holy things, that is, to occupy ourselves daily with God’s Word and carry it in our hearts and upon our lips.” (LC I 89) Unlike our Reformed neighbors Lutherans have not relegated the worship of the church to Sunday only, but traditionally and in keeping with the church catholic have frequently offered the Divine Service and other services of the church during the week. For some this has been done for practical reasons, such as work schedules, or availability. For others, it is a matter of faith. The ongoing and troubling reality of sin in our lives necessitates the need for another opportunity to receive and hear the Gospel. It is through Word and Sacrament that we Christians are made, sustained and comforted over time. Thus, it holds that the church should not be stingy with the gifts of our Lord Christ. Instead it is the contention of this project that the mid-week Divine Service aids in the carrying out of the mission of the church in a fuller and more effective way by helping to form a resilient and faithful Lutheran parish church.\r\nThis Doctor of Ministry project will examine the history and purpose of the mid-week Divine Service, especially within those churches that are descendants of the “Muhlenberg tradition” and subsequently the General Council. This is the tradition from which the author hails as well as the tradition of the ministry setting for this project. The primary objective of this project is to examine how and why mid-week Divine Services were implemented at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ephrata PA. Moreover, this project will seek to encourage other Lutheran parish churches, within and outside of the “Muhlenberg tradition” to consider implementing their own mid-week Divine Services in order to form more resilient and faithful parishes and how that may be accomplished."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu","ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135364068409344,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:49:53.919Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-12T18:03:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"48427bb4-d837-4cce-8b90-b0cbdfbba52f","accessControl_ssim":["5687b008-ebc1-4e7c-b0bf-e2be4958efe2"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["Swimming Against the Stream: Re-dedicating to Parochial School Education in a Post-Christian Context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-12T18:03:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["33163ba0-18d8-4301-82c8-257fe5e75d47"],"hasLease_ssim":["7c4b4358-08c7-4d90-aa51-e3f270f67a4b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles Gieschen"],"committee_member_tesim":["Arthur Just Jr.","Peter Scaer"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The key question is whether the congregation understands the purpose of the parochial school in the same way that those who started the school understood their purpose in doing so. Institutions, including parochial schools, have a tendency to take their raison d'être for granted and begin to exist for the sake of perpetuating themselves as institutions. To re-dedicate to parochial school ministry in a worthwhile way that serves the true mission for which it was founded, a congregation must evaluate its own assumptions about, goals for, and perceptions of the school ministry. This project provides a template for honestly evaluating the pros and cons of continuing to operate a parochial school in difficult circumstances and honestly comparing the stated, original purposes for the school with the actual purposes for the school in the minds of the congregation members. It offers an example of one way to take a congregation through this self-examination process and in this case, how to help the congregation re-dedicate itself to parochial school ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"_version_":1791135253390163968,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:08.368Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-12T16:04:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:47:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"20bdf2c8-e90f-4511-b1f0-96b4ee9a2f3e","accessControl_ssim":["0d7c9caf-a3c7-4ed4-8dcf-d7dc2cfe16cb"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Place and Purpose of Spiritual Gifts In the Scripture: The Understanding of the EECMY-IBS Congregations in Mettu and Alge Towns"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-12T16:04:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:06:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["84c87936-bfc4-4fba-901c-42877bae0eb4"],"hasLease_ssim":["c8902836-0b36-4c4a-a488-2a6685f21a37"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gifford Grobien"],"committee_member_tesim":["John Pless","Martin Noland"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Further, there is no other way or means to meet God and receive his grace except through his audible and visible words. The devil, on the other hand, always works against this permanent truth through his false teachings that human beings would seek and use other alternate means and standards respectively to approach God and examine faith and practice.\r\nAs the teaching and practices of the Prosperity Gospel that undermines the primacy of the Word of God and the importance of the Holy Sacraments are spreading in the working areas of the EECMY-IBS, the researcher conducted this study to give awareness about the danger coming into our congregations with this false teaching.\r\nTo conduct the study, the researcher used questionnaires, which were completed by thirty-nine participants that were recruited from six congregations of the synod to gather viable data. Further, he involved three notetakers who assisted him in taking notes during and after the presentations offered to the participants and the sermons delivered in two congregations. The participants and the notetakers have also participated in analyzing and interpreting data.\r\nThe believers of the area theoretically believe in the authority and primacy of the Word of God and the importance of the Sacraments. Fifty-six percent knew that Peter was the disciple who denied Jesus. And less than fifty percent believed that the bible is the infallible, inherent Word of God. America is increasingly biblically illiterate. We do not know the basics of the Christian story and content. If we do not know the story and content of the faith, then we will not understand what the Church is, why she gathers, and what happens in her midst during the Divine Service on Sunday morning. And if we do not understand the central purpose for and message of our weekly gathering, then Christ’s church, and Christianity for that matter, can become little more than a social or communal gathering. This trend can certainly be observed in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod parishes I serve, and is exacerbated by their small-town context.\r\nOne chief contributing factor to an increase in biblical illiteracy in our churches, beyond an individual’s lack of attentiveness, study, and regular hearing of the Word of God, is the current pragmatic, progressive educational philosophy and pedagogical methodology employed in catechesis and catechetical material, which assumes a general knowledge of the Christian story and content, and thus focuses on the intellectual knowledge and propositional truths of the Christian faith that can be apprehended by reason and assented to intellectually. Catechesis of this nature in increasingly biblically illiterate congregations and society further leads to a disconnected, compartmentalized understanding of the Christian faith and the Divine Service, and their impact on the Christian’s life, thus further solidifying and exacerbating a social understanding of the Christian faith.\r\nIn my dissertation, I propose a more comprehensive and cohesive approach to Christian formation which takes the genius of Luther’s Small Catechism, or the Law/Gospel salvific narrative, and joins it to the framework of the Catechumenate, thereby situating the Law/Gospel salvific narrative into a broader, unified, overarching, grand-sweeping biblical narrative of God’s salvific work in Christ, as proclaimed in Scripture and the Liturgy. Its purpose and design is first, to cultivate a love of the One True God and a desire to dwell with him, here in time: weekly in the Divine Service, and daily through confession and absolution, witness, service, and acts of mercy in the assumption of our respective vocations; and there again in eternity: when Christ appears in glory and we dwell with him forever. Second, to situate the participant’s life into the grand-sweeping biblical narrative. Third, to foster a love for the Lutheran Liturgy and hymnody, and thus orient the participant’s life, both individually and communally, around the presence of Christ through Word and Sacrament in the Divine Service. Fourth, to improve the process of Christian formation for all new, existing, and prospective members. Fifth, to develop a biblical confession and piety that is grounded in the life of Christ. And finally, to improve the integration and participation of members, both existing and new, in the life of their congregation. Loneliness, the loss of independence, grief as a result of the loss of a spouse or loved one, and the like may cause elderly homebound individuals to become consumed by substantial maladies that require mindful attention by those who are given to care for their souls. Effective pastoral care to the aged must be intentional and well informed in order to properly understand the condition of the soul and apply the comfort of the Gospel.\r\nThis project used three uniquely developed directional visitation methodologies in order to discover pressing spiritual maladies and to apply God’s Word through pastoral care. The first two methodologies, a spiritual needs assessment inventory and a self-narrative tool, were used primarily for the discovery of the essential spiritual needs within those studied for this project. The Bible study was developed in two parts. The first Bible study was based on Luther’s theology of the cross which includes exploration of human suffering and vocation. The second Bible study was individually tailored to the specific spiritual needs discovered within the spiritual needs assessment and self-narrative portions of the experiment. Three elderly homebound subjects were visited six different times (two visitations per methodology) for this study. Results indicated that directional methodologies for spiritual needs discovery and the application of pastoral care are effective and commendable."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu","ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135397730844672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:26.022Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-12T15:28:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6d0a0714-8eb1-4d40-b128-c8f33f4f184e","accessControl_ssim":["7941afec-8c49-4d43-ad5c-723a976fafc9"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["A Comparative Study of Deductive and Homiletical Plot Sermons and their Effectiveness in Proclaiming the Gospel"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-12T15:28:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:19:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1ec255c3-df20-4171-8b5b-3c99a39305b6"],"hasLease_ssim":["7246aafd-08f0-4c61-b7cc-05eb3478e94b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Carl Fickenscher II"],"committee_member_tesim":["Jeffrey Pulse","James Bushur"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. From the very beginning of the Christian Church, it has been understood that such preaching would include selecting a form of communication that both suits the message to be preached and is accessible to those who are to hear it.\r\nA variety of sermon forms have been used throughout the history of the Church with great faithfulness and effectiveness. However, in the 18th and 19th centuries, the deductive sermon became the most widely used sermon form in Christian pulpits throughout Europe and the United States and continued to be the dominant sermon form into the 20th century. To this day, the deductive sermon form remains popular in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Not only have most active pastors in the LC-MS learned to preach using the deductive form, many continue to use it regularly in their parishes.\r\nHowever, over the past 50 years many homileticians across Christendom have argued for a move away from the deductive sermon toward a greater variety of forms, especially narrative forms. One particular form, the Homiletical Plot of Eugene Lowry, has especially grown in popularity over the last several decades. Lowry has argued that the Homiletical Plot is a more natural way to preach and hear the Gospel message. This form is currently being used regularly by several well-respected preachers within the LC-MS, and I also make use of this form in my own preaching.\r\nSeveral recent studies on the negative effects of technology on the human brain seem to support the theories that narrative sermon forms like the Homiletical Plot are more effective at communicating the Gospel message to modern audiences.\r\nMy research project and dissertation test the theory that the Homiletical Plot sermon form is more effective in preaching the Law and Gospel to today’s Christians than deductive sermons. The primary purpose of this work is to ensure that I, as a preacher of the Gospel, and all other preachers who use one or both of these sermon forms, are communicating God’s Word in an effective way to our hearers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu","ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135303363198976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:56.026Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-12T15:19:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d55e0d55-877a-4038-b910-af9f0575302d","accessControl_ssim":["63d4ae6c-dceb-4be1-b133-01b6c45bf0eb"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["Evaluation of the Accountable Leadership Model of Governance at Concordia Lutheran Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-12T15:19:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:13:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["97746a4e-8fd7-4d03-815e-f9d21c2e38cb"],"hasLease_ssim":["02f37842-7a37-4943-8750-25596f3878ab"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles Gieschen"],"committee_member_tesim":["Gifford A. Two of the prescriptions focused on aspects of governance. Ten months later, I accepted the Divine Call to Concordia Lutheran Church. The leadership informed me that my priority was to implement the Transforming Congregations Prescriptions. The scope of my study is limited to Concordia Lutheran Church. I will focus on the implementation of the prescriptions that dealt with vision, mission, and the governance at Concordia Lutheran Church. In the following sections, I will describe the problem, purpose, and process of this research.\r\nThe problem that is addressed is to revise the governance structure so that the congregation can fulfill its mission and understand the key issues in the Office of the Ministry that support the process. This project will not provide a new plan for congregational renewal. The purpose of this study is to provide lessons learned from Concordia Lutheran Church to other leaders who are working to renew declining congregations. It also seeks to provide insights from studying the Office of the Ministry that affect pastoral leadership. The process used to reach this goal is to implement, with the participation of the congregation, a new vision, mission, and governance model, develop lessons learned, and review the doctrine of the Office of the Ministry to understand the implications for pastoral leaders as well as congregations. The experiment will be evaluated by determining if the goals of Transforming Congregations Prescriptions were met. I will identify lessons learned through three semi-structured interviews with key participants in the process and by developing a philosophy of ministry statement. This will assist other leaders in their work to renew congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"_version_":1791135428273766400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:55.149Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-12-11T21:13:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:49:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"90c58964-9fd8-4091-9f71-d194bcc6c925","accessControl_ssim":["a37054b7-bfa2-4271-987d-423ab9d2f1a8"],"depositor_ssim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["Teaching the Faith Using Fiction"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-12-11T21:13:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:22:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1a2a007f-7e46-4912-b404-71e62b35e8cb"],"hasLease_ssim":["f66b43e4-cc9e-4ff6-bb37-1f8842c1dddc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cameron A.
