For preachers in Reformed circles who believe that application in preaching is a fundamental requirement, there is a key challenge: how to bring together biblical-theological method with practical exhortations to hearers in a sermon. In homiletics literature this challenge has been both acknowledged and described. The negative effects of this challenge have also been described. Furthermore, a significant amount of literature exists on how to generate application in sermons. Little literature exists however, that describes the nature of the problem itself and its possible causes. This study used a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with five preachers from several denominations, varied preaching contexts and extensive experience who were committed to using a biblical-theological method in their sermon preparation and who knew the challenged outlined above as a practical reality. The literature review and constant-comparative analysis of the five interviews focused on narrative and ethics, Old Testament narrative and Christian ethics and the issues and limitations of biblical theological schemas.This study concluded that there are three primary sources of the challenge outlined above: the nature of Old Testament narrative itself as sophisticated literature, the limitations inherent in biblical theological schemas when applied to sophisticated literature, and the subjugation of the text by the preacher. Pastors fail to preach the Old Testament because it has cultural, linguistic, and hermeneutical challenges. Pastors preach it incorrectly when they fail to connect it with Christ. The purpose of this study was to understand the Old Testament sermon preparation process employed by pastors who preach Christ-centered sermons. Christ-centered Old Testament preaching is often neglected, and therefore the subject is relevant to every Christian preacher of God's word, and by extension to all congregations. This study employed a qualitative design using a semi-structured interview process with six preachers from various Presbyterian and Baptist denominations. Using a Bible written in a commoner-friendly language is essential for the effective work of contemporary ministry. However, those churches that are willing to make the change from the KJV to a contemporary version are faced with a lack of guidelines and principles to help them navigate the transition. In an effort to fill this void, this study examined the change process of a Baptist congregation which transitioned from the King James Version to a modern-language Bible as its primary worship text. The findings confirmed that transitioning from the antiquated wording of the KJV to a contemporary-language version was beneficial to the members and the ministries of the congregation. What may appear to some as a crisis of ambiguity about the nature and place of the Ten Commandments in the public and religious spheres in America could be regarded as an opportunity for clarity on the part of preachers.  The study addresses the need for Church of God preachers to engage in cultural dialogue through a fresh preaching of the Ten Commandments.  The literature review surveys scholarly works regarding the context and meaning of the Decalogue in the Old and New Testaments, the meaning of the Commandments in light of a corrosive postmodern value system, and views of scholars and preachers regarding how to preach the Ten Commandments. The study included interviews with six Church of God Movement preachers, with the goal of learning about their experences related to the place of the Decalogue in the pulpit.
