A massive media shift, comparable to the dawn of the printing press, has been changing cultures worldwide for over adecade. While resources regarding media ecology are increasingly available—as are resourcesdealing with expository preaching and culture—preachers lack resources for expositing thescriptures in a digital age, with its shifting epistemologies. The purpose of this study is toexamine how preachers navigate the challenges of expositing the scriptures to digitally saturatedcongregants.Four research questions guided this qualitative study: 1. In what ways do pastors describethe effects of digital saturation on the lives of their congregants? 2. What challenges do pastorsexperience in intentionally preaching expositionally to engage their digitally saturatedcongregants? 3. What opportunities do pastors experience in intentionally preachingexpositionally to engage their digitally saturated congregants? 4. What strategies do pastorsemploy in meeting the challenges posed by intentionally preaching expositionally to engage theirdigitally saturated congregants? The findings of the study show that the current media ecology has shifted indemonstrable ways from that of the print age, giving way to emerging epistemologies. This studyalso reveals valid concerns regarding the emerging digital ecology and the church’s vital need tobetter understand these epistemologies. Additionally, specific practices and approaches toreading and preaching scripture are presented for improving gospel communication in the currentmedia context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2019/Schatzle_Joshua_DMin_2019.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131145965928448,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:51.223Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:31:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ed5f0bc0-085b-46f8-9b42-529f0778beaf","accessControl_ssim":["faa135a0-a99f-48a3-9e4b-7b6c1ab937ee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'We are all patrons': how artists receive patronage in support of their work for the common good"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:31:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:54:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f7aa0202-7054-4b49-85cd-1c998cb27926"],"hasLease_ssim":["b9a3d521-09f9-4108-b27e-fccd425be7ef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald C. Postmodern authors have noted a significant change in Western culture, affecting world view and specifically denying the existence of an over-arching explanation of reality known as metanarrative. This study employed a qualitative research design interviewing twelve Teaching Elders of the PCA. The findings revealed a strong commitment to the Reformed value that scripture alone is sufficient as a source for the content of sermons. The study revealed a less clearly defined view of the pastoral office, and also that the Elders did not think postmodernism had affected their congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131157835808768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:02.543Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6cfd460d-fa2b-4ff9-a398-8186d3347b04","accessControl_ssim":["fdd9a3d4-f443-4737-939a-3e5618b904f5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The place of the Ten Commandments in the Church of God pulpit"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:19:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["74d4dd63-6afc-4098-80a4-633d30d2bca3"],"hasLease_ssim":["bd37eaf6-ebde-442b-b16d-3c84f2c8a114"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip D Douglass"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew A Taylor"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Expository preaching","Social aspects","Evangelicalism","Bible--Homiletic use","Ten commandments","Preaching","Christian life","Christianity and culture","Church of God (Anderson, Ind)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which Church of God preachers use the Ten Commandments to address their socio-political and ecclesiastical contexts. What may appear to some as a crisis of ambiguity about the nature and place of the Ten Commandments in the public and religious spheres in America could be regarded as an opportunity for clarity on the part of preachers. The study addresses the need for Church of God preachers to engage in cultural dialogue through a fresh preaching of the Ten Commandments. The literature review surveys scholarly works regarding the context and meaning of the Decalogue in the Old and New Testaments, the meaning of the Commandments in light of a corrosive postmodern value system, and views of scholars and preachers regarding how to preach the Ten Commandments. The study included interviews with six Church of God Movement preachers, with the goal of learning about their experences related to the place of the Decalogue in the pulpit. The study asked how the preachers handled the Decalogue, exposited the Commandments, and trained congregations in discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130950545965056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:44.856Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:47:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"caf866a7-d4bc-4bb2-8d2d-349687e3fbc2","accessControl_ssim":["b53df965-845d-4c46-ae54-ab41016b8568"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pursuing church revitalization that is tailored to a church's unique personality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:58:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5342a7b0-12cd-498a-8fe5-67c7e168aacc"],"hasLease_ssim":["2dbab3e1-a829-43fc-b5e0-a5dcbf0c777d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip D Douglass"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Walton R Kendall"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Organizational change","Congregations","Christianity and culture","Presbyterian Church","Church renewal--Reformed Church","Social groups"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to explore how a church's unique personality provides strategic insight for leading church revitalizaiton. The study involved semi-structured interviews with pastors and church leaders from four Presbyterian Church in America churches in the eastern United States. The study revealed that diverse strategies of revitalization reflect the unique mix of gifts and resources that each church possesses, both in its leaders and laypeople. Effective renewal plans are not borrowed from models provided by other churches, but are carefully crafted to fit each unique congregation. The study also revealed the importance of communicating a clear rationale and vision for change but also discerning what kind of change the congregation would most readily embrace. Leaders must possess a unitifed commitment to pursue necessary change but also adapt leadership initiatives and style to fit the congregation. Finally, the study revealed that churches more effectively pursue change when they are aware of their church culture and the opportunities and limitations it represents. The recognition of the dynamics of personality can reveal the most effective pathways to ministry fruitfulness as well as provide insight into pathways that should be avoided."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131470837841920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:48:01.044Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"16e2a2c8-eb76-4c50-a0a3-e34a51eac94e","accessControl_ssim":["36b81b7f-1a09-40d5-820b-407d5301d870"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Understanding and equipping the church in its practice of love through hospitality and redemptive conversation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:47:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["83a18355-ab2f-4b4b-9a04-6ac89cc344b8"],"hasLease_ssim":["172a0773-a9eb-4605-9d3c-90752538c2ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Daniel W Zink"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy A Meendering"],"keyword_tesim":["Practice (Theology)","Worldview"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and culture","Witness bearing (Christianity)","Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christian life","Conversation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project has focused on understanding and equipping the church for its practice of love through hospitality and redemptive conversation. Scripture makes it clear that love for the stranger through the practice of Christian hospitality is a mandate for the church. Scripture also provides instruction for our conversations which are a critical element for communicating the humility, acceptance and love of the gospel. This study has demonstrated that while the faithful practice of hospitality and redemptive conversation is a vital part of the church's mission, it is becoming increasingly difficult to be faithful in these practcies. A review of literature and a series of interviews have exposed the worldview and external factors affecting faithfulness. When interviewees embraced the gospel, were taught by example, were encouraged, and engaged in hospitality and redemptive conversation, the daily resistance and barriers toward faithful practice were often overcome. Most significant was the affirmation of the indispensability of our theology with a kingdom vision, a grasp and embrace of the gospel, or the compelling power of Christ's love for propelling us into the counter-cultural work of hospitality and redemptive conversation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130552174116864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:24.939Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":4,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Christopher A Faria","hits":1,"label":"Christopher A Faria"},{"value":"Eli H.
