Preaching in particular, as a central function of the church, plays a significant mitigating role. The purpose of this study is to explore how senior pastors preach Christ-centered sermons to lower anxiety in congregational systems. The literature review focuses on four key areas: Jesus’ teaching on anxiety in Luke 12, anxiety in family systems perspective, the experience of anxiety in the person, and modern sources of anxiety. This study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight pastors who have served congregations for five years or longer in the role of senior pastor. Four research questions guided this qualitative study: 1. How do senior pastors describe the presence of anxiety in the congregational system? 2. How do senior pastors understand the impact of their presence on anxiety in the congregational system? 3. How do senior pastors negotiate their own anxiety as a part of the congregational system? 4. How do senior pastors describe sermons that lower anxiety in the congregational system? The findings of this study reveal four components required to preach Christ-centered sermons that lower anxiety in the congregational system: discerning systemic realities of the congregation, practicing a non-anxious presence, shaping interpretive frameworks, and communicating in a manner that is challenging yet not coercive. Several practices and attitudes are suggested that best contribute to preaching in a manner that lowers anxiety in the congregational system."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2020/Williams_Roger_DMin_2020.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130480599367680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:16.680Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:30:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ed0a1b62-afb6-4479-97d2-ac26a01a9897","accessControl_ssim":["86db3dbd-827f-4335-b7d8-e42416fd6c7e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["All things in good order: how senior pastors experience the Carver Policy Governance System in their congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:30:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:54:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7c769092-7103-4136-b5d1-031fbcbc36a6"],"hasLease_ssim":["cbe8b77e-475b-4768-b081-491d396a9a11"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce McRae"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy J. Every Christian congregation has a system of governance, an agreed upon method to administer and manage the day to day operations, and exercise the ministry in good order. Many congregations and pastors face great challenges and unrest because of church governance issues. This issue is critical for pastoral health and longevity, as well as, congregational vitality and viability. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structure interview with seven pastors from various denominations who served their congregations as senior pastors for ten years or longer. The literature review and analysis of the seven interviews focused on three key areas: the implementation of the Carver Policy Governance Model into the Congregation, the unique advantages of the Carver Policy Model, and the unique challenges of the Carver Policy Model. This study concluded that there are eight components necessary to implement a policy based Board of Directors as the governing body of a congregation: outside resourcing, biblically based content, special pastoral character, full implementation of the Carver Model with the addition of an elder’s board (or its equivalent), clear separation of the administration and spiritual components, a high level of relational trust, a continual use of evaluation, and the implementation of teams."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2018/Brand_Timothy_DMin_2018.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131613506043904,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:50:17.104Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:41:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2ed26b50-8064-4d13-8c06-5ab1e262bc16","accessControl_ssim":["91b484c7-6296-4e1b-91d4-6ee4b5e35241"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Making room: freedom in non-essentials in the multiracial church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:41:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:29:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f7d3f584-6a04-4195-847d-af8d4a9bcb0a"],"hasLease_ssim":["32973e42-c2b1-480a-84eb-2e9746f1d765"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Greg Perry"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael Anthony Campbell"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Congregations","Race relations","Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to determine how congregants in one southern multiracial church utilize adiaphora to foster multiracial inclusion. The study looked at three models being used by United Methodist churches for multi-site ministry: purchase and build, church merger, and existing space/rental. The study used semi-structured interviews with focus groups from three multi-site United Methodist churches. The study focused on the decision making process in becoming a multi-site church, the transitioning process from a single to multi-site church, the experience of being a multi-site church, and the relationship to the United Methodist hierarchy. The study found that most churches do not start with the intention of becoming a multi-site church, but are influenced by various factors, including some type of crisis, a strong evangelistic emphasis, or a powerful vision. Regarding the transition process, the study found that a sufficient amount of time and careful planning were necessary for success. Key factors were a realistic understanding of the difficulties, the importance of leadership, communication within the congregation and outside, effective advertising, and the use of missioners. The study found that there were struggles as well as benefits in the practice of multi-site ministry. Leadership and leadership development were important factors. Benefits included reaching different demographics and providing variety in worship and ministry styles. Struggles included relating to other churches of the same denomination, dealing with finances, and maintaining a sense of unity. Regarding the relationship with the hierarchy, the study found little information. Most churches experienced minimal help or contact with church officials except in cases of conflict with other churches. There was often misunderstanding with the multi-site model. Greater participation by district superintendents and bishops could be expected with the merger model. The study concluded that multi-site ministry is one effective way that United Methodist churches can expand their ministry and outreach."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131326267523072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:43.172Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:47:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"caf866a7-d4bc-4bb2-8d2d-349687e3fbc2","accessControl_ssim":["b53df965-845d-4c46-ae54-ab41016b8568"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pursuing church revitalization that is tailored to a church's unique personality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:58:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5342a7b0-12cd-498a-8fe5-67c7e168aacc"],"hasLease_ssim":["2dbab3e1-a829-43fc-b5e0-a5dcbf0c777d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip D Douglass"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Walton R Kendall"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Organizational change","Congregations","Christianity and culture","Presbyterian Church","Church renewal--Reformed Church","Social groups"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to explore how a church's unique personality provides strategic insight for leading church revitalizaiton. The study involved semi-structured interviews with pastors and church leaders from four Presbyterian Church in America churches in the eastern United States. The study revealed that diverse strategies of revitalization reflect the unique mix of gifts and resources that each church possesses, both in its leaders and laypeople. Effective renewal plans are not borrowed from models provided by other churches, but are carefully crafted to fit each unique congregation. The study also revealed the importance of communicating a clear rationale and vision for change but also discerning what kind of change the congregation would most readily embrace. Leaders must possess a unitifed commitment to pursue necessary change but also adapt leadership initiatives and style to fit the congregation. Finally, the study revealed that churches more effectively pursue change when they are aware of their church culture and the opportunities and limitations it represents.
