The assumption of this study is that most pastors do not begin their ministry with a sufficient understanding of the need for teamwork amongst their lay leaders and that such teamwork is vital to their ministry success. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight elders at mid-sized churches (approximately 150-450 in attendance) in the Presbyterian Church in America. The literature review and analysis of the eight interviews focused on three key areas to understand the nature of teamwork in mid-sized Reformed churches: trust in teams, power dynamics in teams, and the parity of elders. This study found that the following are the five most common descriptions of teamwork in mid-sized Reformed churches: fellowship beyond business hours builds trust and teamwork; healthy conflict and patient listening are hallmarks of healthy teamwork; power is used “judiciously” in healthy teams; consensus is sought and usually achieved in healthy teams; healthy teams are humble, with no MVP, with no head except Christ. Therefore, the study concluded that these strategies should be implemented and modeled in mid-sized Reformed churches by elders."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2020/Giesman_Matt_DMin_2020.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131177331982337,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:21.136Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9478ab3d-4dca-4d58-8375-73b93f2be55c","accessControl_ssim":["4bd5b0eb-c01e-4bb7-891e-013403c2073f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Transition from Founding Pastor to First Successor Pastor: Every Pastor Is an Interim Pastor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:28:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:28:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9391354f-c18d-4763-9a9b-8ea22b195fbd"],"hasLease_ssim":["95d57291-928e-49ba-9c2e-06e860200d74"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce McRae"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Christopher A. The purpose of the study is to explore how church leaders describe influential factors in their process of transitioning from a founding pastor to a first successor pastor. This study made use of a qualitative design utilizing semi-structured interviews of founding pastors, first successor pastors and key church leaders who were involved in congregations in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) that had recently undergone a transition from a founding pastor to a first successor pastor. The literature review focused on surveying insights and principles related to transition in the following fields of inquiry: Core Ministry Practices, initial Biblical leadership transitions, leadership transitions in stepfamilies, leadership transitions in business, and leadership transitions in churches. This study revealed that there are seven key principles that must be considered in relation to a first pastoral transition:Principle #1: Every Pastor Is an Interim Pastor Principle #2: Founding Pastors Make a Unique Mark Principle #3: Plan for Transition Now Principle #4: Continually Recalibrate Your Culture for Smoother Transition Principle #5: Transition Isn’t Over when the New Pastor is Installed Principle #6: Engage the Inevitable Loss in Transition Principle #7: Even in Difficult Initial Transitions, Hope RemainsThe long-term hope for this study has been to give founding pastors, church planting core groups and church sessions working alongside a founding pastor, tools to heighten their awareness surrounding the complexity and inevitability of an initial pastoral transition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2021/Polski_Christopher_DMin_2021.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131185432231936,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:28.861Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:49:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:40:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"72d9abcb-65c2-4df6-b43e-d57c9e889ff1","accessControl_ssim":["03d6f0ac-241e-4dc2-9212-6dc008f688e3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'What happened?' and 'What now?': exploring how Reformed pastors minister to the parents of apostate emerging adults"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:49:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:29:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["67c54288-fc1b-4c67-aa1d-7c37f42f9829"],"hasLease_ssim":["5c6be98e-7361-4862-9ef4-954ba867890c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C John Collins"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joost Nixon"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Young adults--Religious life","Reformed Church","Christians","Theology, Practical","Non-church-affiliated people","Apostasy--Christianity","Church work with young adults"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to explore how Reformed pastors minister to the parents of prodigal emerging adult children.
