Some members take the 'traditional' approach, seeking God's individual will in their lives. Others take the 'way of wisdom', seeking wise decisions in their choices. Blending the two approaches has led to difficulties at Grace. In this paper, the author contends that the 'way of wisdom' best reflects a biblical model of decision-making. He designed this dissertation to explore the impact of a traditional view upon many of the church's members. Data for this study is taken from a review of literature regarding decision making among Christians, from a survey determining who in the church adheres to the traditional view and from information gained from focus groups composed of church members who take that same view."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131349958000640,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:05.765Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:40:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"11040575-0d92-4efe-8892-4bce484cc4da","accessControl_ssim":["ae465c2b-9eaf-4582-bd4d-d52d8b7db4d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The valued impact of advanced formal theological training on leadership development for the African-American pastor in the National Baptist Convention"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:40:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:37:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["780e5552-4130-4237-a379-621fb071464e"],"hasLease_ssim":["245e5090-49d7-4ef8-bb6e-143b3e4e768f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald C Guthrie"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Michael Patrick"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American Baptists","National Baptist Convention of the United States of America","Clergy--Training of","African American clergy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study's purpose is to discover the valued impact of advanced formal theological training on leadership development in the life of the African-American pastor in the National Baptist Convention. The author seeks to show that using all biblical motives correctly actually enhances Christ-centered preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130518347055104,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:52.679Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:45:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b2835b69-a432-48ad-8714-44a0ca6617a1","accessControl_ssim":["c1c21e7a-fd81-4e31-9f1e-c402afb9d396"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The pastor's spouse: exploring the experience of a spouse in pastoral ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:17:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["71ebe0fa-1b69-4c3a-b2ea-152f9792f66f"],"hasLease_ssim":["d576002e-bb29-4852-acee-705a805d1d14"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bob Burns"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James P Stark"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Spouses of clergy","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Due to the challenges of ministry, many ministry couples are facing stress in their marriage and family. Many pastors leave their place of ministry before they reach their most productive years. Much of the effort to develop ways to sustain effective ministry focuses on the pastor. This study has focused on the spouse of the pastor. The particular focus of this study has been on the phenomenon of the expectations surrounding the pastor usually known as the role of 'pastor's wife'. This present study took advantage of an opportunity to access the data from the Pastor's Summit which was a qualitative research study funding by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. Through this present study it was learned that much can be learned about the phenomenon of the role of 'pastor's wife' through the study of systems theory. Those who find themselves in the role of 'pastor's wife' can also benefit from resources relating to family of origin, emotional intelligence, as well as how to identify safe people and develop healthy relationships. Knowing the relationship between marriage and ministry was also discovered to be very important for ministry couples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131334457950208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:50.983Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"68b97491-0935-4cb3-a3c5-80376ffee8f7","accessControl_ssim":["877ddcfe-f33a-475c-a6d4-2e68d60d9e9d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christ-centered preaching from Old Testament narratives"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:12:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0764518e-5e0e-45b5-92d3-accc489da569"],"hasLease_ssim":["17f9b238-c98c-4fcd-9d65-16a059802c28"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["W Brian Aucker"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark C Livingston"],"keyword_tesim":["Jesus Christ--Relation to Old Testament"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Homiletic use","Jesus Christ"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Old Testament preaching is lacking in the following ways: most pastors are not doing it, or most pastors are doing it in the wrong way. Pastors fail to preach the Old Testament because it has cultural, linguistic, and hermeneutical challenges. Pastors preach it incorrectly when they fail to connect it with Christ. The purpose of this study was to understand the Old Testament sermon preparation process employed by pastors who preach Christ-centered sermons. Christ-centered Old Testament preaching is often neglected, and therefore the subject is relevant to every Christian preacher of God's word, and by extension to all congregations. This study employed a qualitative design using a semi-structured interview process with six preachers from various Presbyterian and Baptist denominations. The findings of this study revealed the need for a clear understanding of the Biblical Theology, a Christ-centered conviction concerning the Old Testament, diligent study from the pastor, the use of study aids, a covenanal framework, and a desire to connect the original message with today's congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130907636137984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:03.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:41:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7c25763c-eda0-4ae6-a33a-20dbc166b52b","accessControl_ssim":["949a4d5f-b980-4842-a2c7-ec56acbc9bc0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Water over the bridge: exploring the connections in W Berry's vision of community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:47:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9f820cf5-bfcb-4d8d-bdbc-f61dd49324a4"],"hasLease_ssim":["fc400ae1-dbe2-44fd-ac60-831b676ac4ba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald Gutherie"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel K Chinn"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Social ethics","Community--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christian ethics","Berry, Wendell, 1934-","Good works (Theology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In Wendell Berry's novel A place on Earth, his fictitious character, Ernest Finley, is hired to rebuild a footbridge destroyed by flood waters. As Ernest restores the bridge he muses taht a bridge is not perhaps the first thing a man would build, but it surely is the first thing a neighborhood would build. This musing reflects Berry's understanding that in order for a community to be healthy, connections must be enacted between all members of a membership: human, non-human, and the place itself. The three relational aspects that connect the members of community are mutuality, responsibility, and affection. In an ever individualized culture, where those in a place are isolated from each other, College of Ozarks can benefit from Berry as he informs its practiced mission by helping their students learn the need to build bridges consisting of mutuality, responsibility, and affection, while teaching them the ethic of good work."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant
