The research concentrated on theidentification of such reasons and determined the contributing factors pertinent toministry at the Mar Thoma Church. The research for this study included a review ofliterature focused on the exodus of the second generation from other ethnic immigrantchurches in America. The literature review primarily featured a biblical, theological, andpractical framework for the following ministry components: worship style, preaching andteaching, pastoral care, friction between generations, and burnout. This study sought todevelop practical ways to produce fruitful ministry at the Mar Thoma Church in America.A descriptive survey, designed and developed by the researcher, yielded 250survey responses from those who met the following mandatory criteria: (1) secondgenerationSouth Indians, (2) who have left or are currently transitioning out of the MarThoma Church in America, and (3) are current members or active participants of otherlocal evangelical American churches. The survey gathered quantitative and qualitativeresponses by including both closed and open-ended questions. The project contains a literature review of the biblical foundation for church membership and the historical development of church membership, followed by two case studies. Church membership in America is declining, and many church leaders wrestle with the place of membership within their own organizations. Many church leaders overlook the role that a membership process can have in the development of disciples. The case studies included in this paper are two examples of churches that seek to use their membership process to enhance discipleship. These churches have a robust process that clearly communicates the expectations of the church with systems in place for accountability and follow-up. While the traditional assimilation model only takes a person from evangelization to membership in the church, the full assimilation model takes a person all the way from evangelization to maturity in Christ. Ten pastors were interviewed about membership, visitor follow-up, involvement without pastors, and restoration of those who left one church for another local church. They were exposed to concepts involving the greater church body in the restoration process especially when there had been immorality or divisiveness. When all three of these components become daily repeated experiences the believers are assimilated. This project has four main components. First, a biblical study intended to determine the biblical assimilation principles that effectually work in believers' lives. Second, a literature study to discover the theological factors that affect the assimilation process of believers into the functioning body. Third, two case studies of American leading churches through survey questionnaires and onsite interviews and observation. Fourth, the results of the studies are the functional factors in formulating the assimilation principles for the Chinese Bible Church of Jakarta, Indonesia. From the assimilation and church growth literature review and the biblical study ten significant assimilation principles were selected for this study. Each principle was present in the first century church (Acts 2:42-47) and in the life of Christ.
