Though the community is growing, the church is not. The purpose of this dissertation was to understand why the church’s growth has plateaued. The hypothesis was: as Rhea’s Mill Baptist Church gives attention to issues associated with space, small groups, and focus, the church will move from plateaued to growing. The body of this dissertation is divided into three parts. It begins with a review of relevant literature concerning issues of space, small groups, and focus as they relate to church growth. This is followed by an explanation of why qualitative case study research was used to evaluate two churches that successfully moved from plateaued to growing. The case-studies demonstrated that there is a link between giving attention to issues associated with space, small groups, and focus and a church successfully moving from plateaued to growing. The dissertation concludes with applications that will aid in helping Rhea’s Mill Church move from its current plateau to growing once again."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130602044391424,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:12.499Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:56:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:27:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3a1acfd7-4b5f-45b7-91d6-3db96e608efc","accessControl_ssim":["b48b16f5-56b9-4b0c-a4bb-05be01e83f4c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Selected case studies investigating the principles of visionary leadership of the senior pastor in the revitalization of a declining church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:56:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:48:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0ac14a95-9776-4de6-bad3-731dcac86cbb"],"hasLease_ssim":["add118e4-1b48-46af-b25a-a7aeec11da65"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["D. The research for this study included a review ofliterature focused on the exodus of the second generation from other ethnic immigrantchurches in America. The literature review primarily featured a biblical, theological, andpractical framework for the following ministry components: worship style, preaching andteaching, pastoral care, friction between generations, and burnout. This study sought todevelop practical ways to produce fruitful ministry at the Mar Thoma Church in America.A descriptive survey, designed and developed by the researcher, yielded 250survey responses from those who met the following mandatory criteria: (1) secondgenerationSouth Indians, (2) who have left or are currently transitioning out of the MarThoma Church in America, and (3) are current members or active participants of otherlocal evangelical American churches. The survey gathered quantitative and qualitativeresponses by including both closed and open-ended questions. The survey was designedto gather demographic and personal information and details concerning the surveyrespondents’ experiences at both the Mar Thoma Church and local evangelical Americanchurches. The results from this study will be used as a catalyst for purposefuldiscussions concerning the ministry paradigm for the Mar Thoma Church in America. The results will also assist the leadership of the Mar Thoma Church in the developmentand implementation of fundamental reforms that will effectively minister to the secondgeneration."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130833084481536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:52.835Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:40:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d000bc71-c73e-4553-b27f-145402c4c47b","accessControl_ssim":["d00f6608-1dc8-4749-baec-2a79e9556acc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Selected Case Studies Of Six Metrics For Pastoral Leadership Health And Multiplication"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:05:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1e4499dd-42ee-4ca2-b136-16303c177862"],"hasLease_ssim":["a6798b39-b18a-4705-89b5-9487633b8213"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Willie Peterson D.Min.","D. 4) El pastor hispano debe desarrollar nuevas capacidades pastorales ajustadas a la cultura de la iglesia hispana de Los Ángeles."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1837353115156742144,"timestamp":"2025-07-11T12:21:16.094Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:43:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:45:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fee9d52a-c494-4c21-8f3d-3074a283c025","accessControl_ssim":["1228c213-bdce-4a1c-9a82-dd53a11828b9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Selected case studies on how to revitalize a traditional church ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:43:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:25:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7bcbea72-31fd-47d4-b278-282d5b00a3ab"],"hasLease_ssim":["b946e2e1-cd4d-471b-8d85-e05b818a2ea5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Andrew B Seidel"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy R Rogers"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation is an examination of the quality of leadership necessary to sustain revitalization in the traditional church. A case study model approach was used to gather data from three churches at least fifty years old that have undergone some form of revitalization. The leadership focus was twofold: first, inquiry was made on the kind of leadership structures or systems that the churches had in place, and second, consideration was given to the person of the senior leader: his strengths, weaknesses, and other personal traits. Several conclusions were reached throughout this study, with the overarching research conclusion being that church contexts that are best positioned for revitalization are ones in which both the leader and the leadership system can be described as healthy or pursuing greater health. With the understanding that God is the ultimate source of spiritual renewal, this study focuses on what we can control: the environment of leadership within the church. As such, consideration is given to exploring what healthy systems and healthy leaders might look like and to understanding the challenges that accompany this difficult work of revitalizing a traditional church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131288293343232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:06.957Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:25:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"312efcc3-3c59-409b-bcc5-4ea575e9000d","accessControl_ssim":["5bda662c-0373-4e27-b2f2-6b323c9e1f46"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Factors affecting church growth in selected Filipino-Chinese churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:24:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:33:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8ffffc34-eb40-404b-b42b-de4df6fefa14"],"hasLease_ssim":["614bdf88-12e5-4b9e-ba19-9794f620cf8e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John W Reed"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Vicente Y Sia"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal","Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study attempts to present the factors affecting the growth of eight selected Filipino-Chinese churches. The eight factors of a healthy church were derived from Christian Schwartz's 'Natural Church Development.' Seventy-nine interviewees participated between May 22 and September 12, 2000. An optional ChurchSmart Resources 'Releasing Your Church's Potential' seminars were also facilitated. The eight respondent churches were asked to form an implementation team to execute the recommendations by the ChurchSmart Resources personnel and the researcher.
