A popular myth holds that the marriages of most couples raising a special needs child end in divorce. However, numerous studies show this is not always the case; in fact, in many instances, raising a special needs child makes a couple’s marriages stronger. This study focused on researching and identifying key factors contributing to marital satisfaction among couples raising a special needs child. Previously, there has been little research done on this topic, a fact which inspired the researcher to look into this phenomenon. The discovery of these major factors will be helpful to couples raising special needs children, pastors, and marriage counselors.To gather the necessary data for this study, three different methods were used. First, descriptive surveys were administered to discover qualified couples who fulfilled the established criteria. Second, the quantitative research method was employed through surveys that were used to identify key factors contributing to the marital satisfaction of the volunteering couples. Third, the qualitative research method was used through personal interviews with the selected couples to identify the major factors that contributed to their satisfaction in their marriages.The results of this research support the association between marital satisfaction among Korean American couples raising a special needs child and communication, spirituality, and commitment. This study and its discoveries should provide valuable resources to pastors, leaders, and marriage counselors who are in a position to assist couples who struggle in their marriage while raising a special needs child."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130227213074432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:15.032Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:27:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"56b47ad3-0efd-4245-8721-5230de3bf399","accessControl_ssim":["b8761e3f-3f54-4ba1-9289-4d2839819f3b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An Evaluation of the Efficacy of E-Learning on Marital Conflict"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:27:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:40:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["427618b1-2d17-455e-ad46-20c69f2c09f0"],"hasLease_ssim":["d2efaabc-3011-48e4-96a6-7e11825176be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary Barnes Ph.D.","French Jones Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ly Hai Tran"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage","Conflict management","Marriage counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Despite the availability of quality evidence-based interventions like certain therapies and relationship-educational resources, marital strain and divorce continue to be problems in the U.S. and around the world today. Among the number of reasons couples seek dissolution or suffer through years of dissatisfaction, conflict and poor communication skills stand out as not only one of the main common denominators but the issue that prevents all the other problems from being addressed. Therapy and education are readily available, but several barriers prevent couples from taking advantage of such resources: financial limitations, accessibility or knowledge of the resources, or social stigma reasons.Technology and the trending availability of online resources present an opportunity to bridge existing help resources for couples with e-learning platforms that may creatively overcome such barriers. Can e-learning and online marital education resources on critical issues like conflict resolution help to improve marriages?This study, which followed eight individuals as they went through an online educational course on marital conflict, determined that, if left on their own without any additional help and with only the course to guide them, they could experience notable improvements in their marriage using e-learning marital resources. This finding opens the door to future research and numerous application questions as online delivery platforms are capable of dramatically outpacing the financial and scalability constraints of traditional in-person marriage therapy and relationship education."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130326825697280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:50.029Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:05:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:34:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"92f7b961-83d9-4424-9ba6-891316d5ff07","accessControl_ssim":["55c27cfb-25fa-4dfa-9119-3f3242c11f7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An evaluation of the marriage core program among the Chinese Christian couples in Hong Kong"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:04:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:26:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ced8685a-4384-4b52-a5aa-45253329ba68"],"hasLease_ssim":["b96355ef-16a4-4ec8-a39c-4577a5f182a7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jerry C Wofford","Charles Dickens"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph Tsang-Sing Lam"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage counseling","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The investigator found that in both theological and social science research, there are seven virtues for building a strong Christian marriage, namely, humility, spirituality, commitment, intimacy, passion, forgiveness and magnification of Christ. This study began with a survey of biblical and professional literature that examined the divine paradigm for marriage, the stressors associated with ministry, and critical steps couples took to create a more amicable, enduring relationship. Next, the project gleaned information from a survey distributed to couples who have been married for at least thirty years and have served in the pastorate. The project director compiled, synthesized, and reported the results. The conclusions drawn affirm that God's marital construct can and will endure the stressors of ministry when couples apply biblical principles. The data showed a significant increase in marital health, and also showed that the teaching venue is a significant contributing factor to those results."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130042748633088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:19.113Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:21:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:21:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04fcc01f-1299-4b24-8ded-751ba9363354","accessControl_ssim":["b23b40df-b1cc-4e4a-bea0-2e2fd9fd10f8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral options with cohabiting couples"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:21:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:15:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b0808014-bad4-4e03-ba98-3297c1bfab9a"],"hasLease_ssim":["cbd75f28-5f14-4613-9e9b-6e7c396e69f7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James R Slaughter"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffery J VanGoethem"],"keyword_tesim":["Pastoral counselors and clients"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with unmarried couples","Marriage--Biblical teaching","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project seeks to develop a sound, biblical method of counseling cohabiting couples, particularly when they approach pastors and churches to perform weddings. The program is based on the cognitive/behavioral tradition providing insight and skills needed to change thinking and behavior. This approach not only enables married couples to learn effective ways of developing a more stable and satisfying relationship, but also provides a structure in which the learned skills can be put into practice. 12 couples participated in this 8-week program. They completed the following 7 components: 1) attendance and participation in the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program Approach seminar; 2) reading 2 marriage enrichment books; 3) Bible-based devotional reading and prayer twice weekly; 4) a date night every other week; 5) weekly meetings; 6) a weekend retreat; and 7) attendance and participation in a 'Celebration of Commitment' ceremony. The ENRICH Marital Inventory was given as a pre- and post-test. It was used to measure the effectiveness of the program along with verbal and written reporting by the couples. The hypothesis validated by the research for all 12 couples is: Having completed the marriage enrichment program, couples will report greater marital stability and satisfaction."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131181597589504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:25.204Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":8,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":2,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Colby E Kinser","hits":1,"label":"Colby E Kinser"},{"value":"Gary Barnes","hits":1,"label":"Gary Barnes"},{"value":"Jeffery J VanGoethem","hits":1,"label":"Jeffery J VanGoethem"},{"value":"John R Breneman","hits":1,"label":"John R Breneman"},{"value":"Joseph Tsang-Sing Lam","hits":1,"label":"Joseph Tsang-Sing Lam"},{"value":"Limei W Weng","hits":1,"label":"Limei W Weng"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Pastoral counselors and clients","hits":1,"label":"Pastoral counselors and clients"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Marriage counseling","hits":10,"label":"Marriage counseling"},{"value":"Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity","hits":5,"label":"Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"},{"value":"Family counseling","hits":2,"label":"Family counseling"},{"value":"Marriage","hits":2,"label":"Marriage"},{"value":"Chinese Americans","hits":1,"label":"Chinese Americans"},{"value":"Church work with unmarried couples","hits":1,"label":"Church work with unmarried couples"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":1,"label":"United States"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":10,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Dallas Theological Seminary","hits":8,"label":"Dallas Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":10,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2014","hits":2,"label":"2014"},{"value":"2021","hits":2,"label":"2021"},{"value":"1995","hits":1,"label":"1995"},{"value":"1998","hits":1,"label":"1998"},{"value":"2000","hits":1,"label":"2000"},{"value":"2011","hits":1,"label":"2011"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Dallas Theological Seminary","hits":10,"label":"Dallas Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":8,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Doctor of Ministry","hits":2,"label":"Doctor of Ministry"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Dallas Theological Seminary","hits":10,"label":"Dallas Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":10,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":10,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
