The desired outcome of this programwas to help Haitian pastors better appreciate the art of preaching, be more passionateabout sermon preparation, and be able to identify a process for sermon preparation. Inaddition, on a broader level, the project evaluated whether this program improved theirattitude toward expository sermon preparation and increased their confidence by using astandardized process.A well-balanced sermon is clear, true, relevant, and biblical. These arenecessities for a sermon to accomplish its purpose of changing lives to the glory of God.A link exists between satisfactory sermon preparation and its delivery. Preparation priorto delivery was considered in this project. The value of preparation was highlightedbecause all good preachers should take this characteristic seriously. Preparation is theaction or process of making ready or being made ready for use or consideration.Clarity and effective communication are two important characteristics ofdeveloping a well-balanced and clear sermon. The flow of a sermon depends on bothclarity and effective communication skills. Therefore, these skills were addressed duringthe evaluation of this homiletics training seminar manual.Commitment is necessary for producing well-balanced sermons. Otherwise,congregants will become undernourished because preachers lack the skill to prepare anddeliver expository and well-balanced sermons.A questionnaire and two focus groups were part of the evaluation process forthis project. The pre-survey evaluated those who participated in the training seminar. Itprovided a foundational understanding of their ability to develop expository preachingskills. Biblical narratives are stories often without explicit statements of teaching. A review of literature shows that there are deficiencies in various traditional approaches in identifying the author-intended thrust of a biblical narrative such as looking for good or bad models, arbitrarily creating principles for applications, and presuming linkage to redemptive-history. On the other hand, a literary approach and the notion of authorial doing with saying in linguistics are promising to help the interpreters identify the author-intended pericopal theology for preaching. It was hypothesized that by incorporating elements from the literary approach and notion of authorial doing in a hermeneutics course, the Asian seminary students might better identify the pericopal theology of a biblical narrative for preaching. The effectiveness of this approach was assessed in this research which was about program development and evaluation. Specifically, major changes were made to an existing basic hermeneutics course so that the students were introduced to key concepts and elements in the literary approach and notion of authorial doing with saying.An instrument was developed to collect both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the effectiveness of the final modified course. The instrument includes a pre-test and a post-test to generate quantitative data, and an open-ended question to gather qualitative data. The instrument was administered to a group of participating Asian seminarians. The data collected was analyzed to validate the hypotheses of the research project. The data verified all three hypotheses and affirmed that attending this course is associated with higher ability and confidence of the students in identifying the theological thrust of a biblical narrative for preaching. By surveying sermons given by preachers in the New Testament, modern literature on the subject of preaching, and personal interviews with eight seasoned preaching pastors, the conclusion was reached that a preacher's perceived primary role does not affect their starting point in preaching. This method of sermon preparation was a comprehensive approach integrating the benefits of long-term planning with an extended homiletical method. It mapped out a quarter of the year's preaching calendar and then staggered each sermon's preparation period, stretching it out over weeks instead of days. All of this was done with the hope that each stage of the expository process would be accomplished, and that the overall result would be an expository sermon with increased quality in both design and delivery. The research sought to assess the extent to which long-term sermon preparation increased the sermon quality. The results were incongruent and hence inconclusive. The quantitative research did not strongly support the hypothesis that long-term sermon preparation increases sermon quality in design and delivery. The qualitative assessment, however, did support the hypothesis strongly. Caccioppo in a sermon series on 1 Corinthians. Expository preaching must be persuasive and life-changing, grounded on synthetic, holistic interpretation. The extended value of a series based on a biblical book and that more enduring effect are likely to occur through a cognitive process called 'elaboration.' Since the project was carried out in the uncontrolled environment of a local church, results were tentative and descriptive rather than definitive or predictive.  Three communication factors emerged as significant: trustworthiness, clarity of exposition, and receptor-experience-based terminology.
