The response to the cry for justice which the denomination answered with its founding has been overshadowed by members’ individual pursuits of personal piety. The roots of the problem lie in the cultural, theological, and practical inability to reach behaviorally challenged children and youth who have been traumatized by ACEs. This injurious practice ends up impeding the participation of lower-tier churches and hinders the building of authentic Christ-like relationships.  This project intends to introduce gospel hospitality as a spiritual value that invites all clergy and lay leaders to the table of relationships as equal advocates. The researcher used constructive narrative theology to collect and interpret the data that was generated through the project. The benefits of combining pastoral care, sermon preparation, and preaching in a retreat setting to several married couples are explored. Designed to help couples develop healthy relationship skills and competencies, the sermons provide biblical references, theological information, and practical tools of pastoral counselors. I show through contextual practice how couples learn skills and receive tools to assist them with cultivating a healthy marriage. The location of the work was two Black churches in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church and included preaching a variety of sermons, followed by congregational research on the influence of the sermons on church growth. Through this project, the thesis on which this work was based, that church growth was a direct result of good preaching, changed to recognize that while preaching alone does not cause church growth, it is one of many significant factors in the decision to join a church. Mt. Hope Baptist Church is a historically African American church nestled in a moderately rural Virginia community, which is in the midst of an enormous population, socioeconomic, and demographic transition. How will this community transition impact Mt. Hope? The purpose of the research was to determine what effect, if any, a relational meeting campaign and two multicultural, multiracial Christian education classes would have on incorporating multicultural, nonblack attendees into the life of Mt. Hope Baptist Church. The research determined that the threshold to incorporate multicultural, nonblack attendees into the life of Mt. Hope Baptist church has been traversed. This project predicts that by studying the scriptures and the liturgy for Holy Communion church members will develop a theology of table defined as an understanding of Holy Communion that arises out of a profound vision of who Jesus is, his sacrifice for humanity and his commandment to come to the table in remembrance of him. A group of 18-26 year olds will partner with a fifty-something pastor in sermon preparation for three months. The group will reflect on selected biblical texts and provide insights for sermon development.  Data from the group, the preached sermons, sermon evaluations, and interviews with key stakeholders will inform recommendations for next steps. In this project, the author proposes that reimagining call and response in preaching as an ongoing sermon conversation advances discipleship in the congregation. The congregation begins the dialogue with the preacher prior to the development of the sermon; participates in traditional call and response during the sermon, and continues the conversation after the sermon is preached.
