Working within the paradigm of the Quaker listening model, as described by activist and educator Parker J. Palmer and others, the intentional use of a spiritually based therapeutic listening model is an effective tool used by the Registered Nurse (RN) in working with patients and their families in making decisions in critical care settings. The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire.  Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control).  The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples.  It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits.  There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator.
