Basing the study on a biblically based Lutheran theology of baptism, congregational redevelopment theory, and the educational theories of Sara Little, the project generates enthusiasm among course participants, but evaluation shows no statistically significant changes in their attitudes compared to a control group. Sixteen lay leaders participated in a four-week training course in spiritual development, followed by four weeks of trial ministry. This systematic emphasis on spiritual growth was rooted in traditions of spiritual direction, biblical mandates to seek God and exercise the spirit, and the affirmation that Christians live as members of gathering, witnessing communities. This study shows that leadership training can be very effective, especially in a campus ministry setting, by nurturing and training the many intellectual young adults available.  It endeavors to utilize leadership training for class meeting leaders as a vehicle for developing lay leadership. Such integration is demonstrated through the writings of participants which exhibit four criteria: sensibility, insight or awareness, conviction and congruence between meaning and feeling.  A fifth criterion, release of energy or action, is not present or not determined by the evaluation methods of the study. It is grounded in a theology of stewardship and is tested with two new member classes at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. These 'Guidelines for Christian Stewards' also are used with an adult membership class in a nearby Lutheran parish and with a group of new Christians in a Roman Catholic Church. Successful, innovative programs in other churches are examined. It stresses the importance of a congregation becoming more involved in the baptism of each child and provides resources for parents to guide children.  This model for a congregational baptismal ministry includes concepts of the baptismal liturgy, the learning methodologies of the Small Catechism, and the redemptive approach of small Koinonia groups of parents.  This project was the response of two churches to fill an evident void within the whole church.
