This thesis project focuses on the use of celebrative preaching as a homiletical design to address this challenge. It presents details of the project, the ministry context, the homiletical approach, plans, processes, survey responses, as well as the outcomes that ensued while seeking to resolve this issue. It also explores some of the factors that contribute to this predicament and provides relevant advice on how to address it. As we seek to live out this mission as a denomination and measure our effectiveness in doing so, the denomination has focused on local congregation vitality and its measurement. However, many across the leadership of the church increasingly agree that because of the decline of mainline protestant churches for well over fifty years, we still use an old paradigm that focuses too much on counting people in the pews and money in the offering plates and rather than the whole panoply of the aspects of disciple-making. The committee first explores the meaning of church membership based on an understanding of ekklesia and the body of Christ metaphor, a theology of discipleship related to baptism, and a systems view of the congregation, in order to design and lead the class. To overcome this problem, a newcomer assimilation curriculum was developed, based on biblical understanding of a searching God, Jesus as teacher, and the apostles as guides to new life, theological principles gained from the history of religious education, and systems theory. It was carried out in Mokdong Methodist Church for three months. A project of congregational assessment was used to enable an urban congregation with declining membership to be engaged in evangelization.
