The project uses semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and participatory group observation to collect data on change in clergy participants' leadership of missional growth before and after implementation of skills derived from the practice of midwifery.  The data collected measures change in discernment ability and effectiveness in advancing mission. The project reflected the role of lead associate pastor during the transition time and involves lay people, lay leaders, and staff who participated in vision development meetings and listed to a sermon series on the church's need for a new vision. Measurement of the effectiveness of collaborative leadership involves pre- and post-strategy implementation surveys and semi-structured interviews. In this project, the author proposes that reimagining call and response in preaching as an ongoing sermon conversation advances discipleship in the congregation. The congregation begins the dialogue with the preacher prior to the development of the sermon; participates in traditional call and response during the sermon, and continues the conversation after the sermon is preached. Pastors in two districts of the United Methodist Church were surveyed with follow-up interviews regarding their perceptions and practices around duties listed under 'order' in The United Methodist Book of Discipline. Comparisons and contrasts in thinking are identified between ordained and non-ordained clergy. The program was offered in three-week retreats focusing on spiritual formation, discipleship and stewardship, and church administration. Pre and post-tests of the three sessions assessed the increase in knowledge and effectiveness of leadership. It was based on the theological affirmations that true preaching extends the work of the Incarnation; that worship provides experiences including: providence, faith, grace, repentance, communion, vocation, and an awareness of the holy; and that the thrust of all pastoral work, including preaching, is the communication of the love and acceptance of God.  Ten people met for an hour each Sunday, discussed the sermon and reviewed the Scripture for the next week.  A feedback form was given to the congregation each week.  The results were more effective communication, better constructed sermons, and more effective integration of preaching and pastoral care.
