This project demonstrates that the ministry of worship can be used to offer church council members a more clearly focused and more richly rewarding experience of serving in leadership. The project uses semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and participatory group observation to collect data on change in clergy participants' leadership of missional growth before and after implementation of skills derived from the practice of midwifery.  The data collected measures change in discernment ability and effectiveness in advancing mission. The project reflected the role of lead associate pastor during the transition time and involves lay people, lay leaders, and staff who participated in vision development meetings and listed to a sermon series on the church's need for a new vision. Measurement of the effectiveness of collaborative leadership involves pre- and post-strategy implementation surveys and semi-structured interviews. The results of this project revealed that the teachers have a strong sense of vocation and commitment as teachers.  However, they lack self-confidence as teachers due to their inadequate training and preparation. Sixteen lay leaders participated in a four-week training course in spiritual development, followed by four weeks of trial ministry. This systematic emphasis on spiritual growth was rooted in traditions of spiritual direction, biblical mandates to seek God and exercise the spirit, and the affirmation that Christians live as members of gathering, witnessing communities. This study shows that leadership training can be very effective, especially in a campus ministry setting, by nurturing and training the many intellectual young adults available.  It endeavors to utilize leadership training for class meeting leaders as a vehicle for developing lay leadership.
