The author explores several roadblocks to spiritual formation such as functional Deism, family of origin issues, Old Covenant ministry practices, and the basic principles of the world, in an attempt to discover an effective way to deal with thsoe obstacles. He presents a theological backdrop for pastoral ministry that places relationship with God at the heart of the narrative, reviews writings of Gregory of Nyssa, Bernard of Clarvaux, Jonathan Edwards, and surveys germane material from neurobiology and attachmetn theorists. He conducted qualitative research interviews of 13 pastors in the Capital District of New York State to ascertain how they motivate people for formation into the likeness of Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131875474931712,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:26.937Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:05:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:10:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f30ec862-3787-4f11-ac06-c2032498a4b9","accessControl_ssim":["3d516d96-c7fe-45bb-9a94-d2e362843207"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Postmodern evangelism and discipleship: the gospel as comedy, tragedy, and fairy tale"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:05:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:04:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["49178166-8f1d-4eb8-a9a0-0279c32ab039"],"hasLease_ssim":["a44a0407-7415-4103-9715-ee2abfe5b5ba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Louis D Underwood"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Discipling (Christianity)","Jesus Christ as an example to be followed","Evangelistic work","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["For successful evangelism and discipleship in the postmodern age, Christians must live out what they believe incorporating spiritual disciplines as taught by Jesus such as prayer, praise, fasting, etc., and obeying His commands to love God and love others. But Jesus did not stop with servant leadership.  He took his leadership with the disciples to the next level when he stated, 'I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from the Father I have made known to you (John 15:15).  This thesis develops the idea that leadership modeled after the ministry of Jesus, which includes the ingredient of deep friendship, is more effective than leadership that does not include friendship.  In developing this idea, this thesis examines the reasons leaders have often avoided friendship and how doing this has compromised their effectiveness. It presents research from over one hundred surveys, showing how friendship has been central in the development of leaders (both clergy and laity alike). It also examines historical and contemporary writings on friendship to support this idea.  This thesis shows that intentional friendship results in increased effectiveness and is essential for a leader who strives to follow Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130881352531968,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:38.868Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":5,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Louis D Underwood","hits":1,"label":"Louis D Underwood"},{"value":"Matthew R Messner","hits":1,"label":"Matthew R Messner"},{"value":"Michael L Parrott","hits":1,"label":"Michael L Parrott"},{"value":"Ronald E Zook","hits":1,"label":"Ronald E Zook"},{"value":"Thomas M Corey","hits":1,"label":"Thomas M Corey"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":1,"label":"Relation (Theology)"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Jesus Christ as an example to be followed","hits":5,"label":"Jesus Christ as an example to be followed"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Christianity","hits":2,"label":"Spiritual life--Christianity"},{"value":"Bible--Devotional use","hits":1,"label":"Bible--Devotional use"},{"value":"Covenant theology","hits":1,"label":"Covenant theology"},{"value":"Discipling (Christianity)","hits":1,"label":"Discipling (Christianity)"},{"value":"Education--Curricula","hits":1,"label":"Education--Curricula"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":5,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":5,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":5,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2010","hits":3,"label":"2010"},{"value":"2005","hits":1,"label":"2005"},{"value":"2009","hits":1,"label":"2009"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":5,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":5,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":5,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":5,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":5,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
