The purpose of this study is to reintroduce the figure of John Berridge to a contemporary readership. Second it will argue that it is John Berridge's appropriation of the post-Reformational experiential tradition with its re-discovery of justification by faith that is foundational to his conversion, surrounds his experience in the Cambridgeshire Revival, and sustains his ministry in Everton. Finally using Berridge's life and ministry as an example, this study will reflect on the key issues facing pastors in the current cultural milieu: the need to re-cover the doctrine of justification by faith in pastoral preaching and ministry, understanding the context and natiue of the revival, the challenge of pastoring in and through revival, the prerequisite of a sustained ministry, and finishing well."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129916545171456,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:18.756Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:18:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:46:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"76defc85-f1be-422d-b73c-455bcc417a77","accessControl_ssim":["9f467384-b9cc-4c5c-acb5-554fc795ff42"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Christ-centered renewal: the growth of the Moravian Church Southern Province from 1877 to 1930"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:18:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:37:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["953fdf0f-6dd1-4abc-9bda-2319108fe22b"],"hasLease_ssim":["0e3a14e8-050e-4fe0-b719-f62938208b97"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell","Robert Mayer"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy G Sapp"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Rondthaler, Edward, 1842-1931","Moravian Church--History","Revivals","Christian life","Evangelistic work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis project focused on a period of time for the Moravian Church of America Southern Province from 1877 to 1930. Dr. John Sung spoke to the Chinese people in various meetings and many turned to the Lord. While preaching, Dr. Sung would often spontaneously interrupt the preaching to lead the congregation in hymnal choruses. The singing plus his message led many people to the Lord. In the 1990's, the Chinese churches in China increased rapidly and many people were spiritually revived and came to know the Lord. One of the reasons why the number of Christians has grown in China has been because of how God has used a young village girl, Xiao Min, to write hundreds of worship hymns by the moving of the Holy Spirit and many were moved by the hymnal singing. This thesis is a study of the relationship between spiritual revival and the singing of worship songs by using the Canaan hymns in Chinese churches as a central case study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132338619416576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:01:48.625Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:58:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:58:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b92e35f0-01da-47c0-a89f-edd8a5d34455","accessControl_ssim":["825fb8e1-fcc2-4d19-a258-5112293831f7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Head, heart, and hands discipling: the historical road to lasting revival"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:58:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:28:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35cfb1d3-5fb7-444a-af8b-c68683a2bef8"],"hasLease_ssim":["280213fb-611a-44b1-8f26-780273a0416d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Keith A Blank"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Discipling (Christianity)","Church renewal","Christian education of adults","Revivals","Christian life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author intends to introduce a method by which churches can revive their members by instituting a program of head, heart, and hands discipling and to build a template for pastors and leaders to use in evaluation of prospective programs. The author believes that the term 'revival' has been misunderstood in view of the biblical meaning and needs to be redefined for the modern church. We can be renewed by focusing on the fact that God has sent us a Savior and being Christ's body here on earth. Churches can turn this concept into an action plan for their congregation by instituting a program that honors Christ's methods of discipling and the activities of the historical revivalists, appealing to the whole person: head, heart, and hands. John Wesley's class meeting system was successful because it focused on these elements. The Navigators are a modern-day example. Prime's The power of prayer and Talbot Chambers's The noon prayer meeting of the North Dutch Church, Fulton Street, New York, this study seeks to expand the narrative to include the historical material of the time.  This project includes an examination of literature seeking relevant opinions and insights into the Fulton Street prayer meetings.  The foundational historical framework for the revival is presented in two elements.  First, an examination is made of the historical context of the revival, including changes in the United States from 1812 to the Civil War, focusing on the economic, geographic, political, journalistic, and social elements. Second, an investigation is made of the opinions and concerns of four churchmen of noted integrity, demonstrating that most concerns revolving around the revival were pastoral in nature."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130246510018560,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:33.435Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:54:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:58:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b9f70ad0-d374-4053-ad0c-9f0f8b5571f3","accessControl_ssim":["af96d5c8-58f3-457c-8413-51ff83d62fa1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Renew us, heal us, rebuild us, use us: a biblical and historical study of American revival for Congregational churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:54:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:29:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["434042ad-bf67-44c3-a150-4a636d83ae8b"],"hasLease_ssim":["8089c743-9c4f-4993-8a2b-a6d9c1765f44"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carlton K Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual life--Christianity","Revivals","Church renewal--Congregational churches","Spiritual life--Biblical teaching","Congregational churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this dissertation is that God has established steps by which the Church of Jesus Christ can help prepare the way for Him to bring about revival in His time and according to His plan. The goal is to consider the biblical definition and role of worship, assessing the merits of the contemporary styles as conduits of genuine God-honoring worship.  A brief overview of worship styles spawned by divergent traditions in the Christian Church is included, providing a relevant historical framework.  Contemporary worship music is an unavoidable topic of debate.  It plays an increasingly prominent role in even those denominational traditions that have heretofore exclusively embraced traditional or historic worship.  Many persons are critical of the contemporary phenomena. This thesis will attempt to assess the merits of the principal, recurring criticisms. While it is difficult to predict future trends, and impossible to do so with absolute accuracy, there are observable indicators of the directions worshippers are taking and may take.  The core quest of this thesis is to determine if these contemporary trends and future shifts in worship styles and emphases might augur a God-sent revival."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131896545017856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:47.031Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:06:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:44:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6f97c587-b6f8-414f-b714-bd54b4810f16","accessControl_ssim":["0814657f-8767-4841-beec-cd6b2b89edee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Retaking the village green: building strategic partnerships for evangelism that work in New England"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:06:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:24:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b488fabc-6b62-4c01-a0dd-ace7cd5cf4fd"],"hasLease_ssim":["81e6f52f-27e3-4014-b151-f1310bf8b99b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"location_tesim":["Maine","United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kevin T McBride"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Evangelistic work","Revivals","Palau, Luis"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["New England has a rich history of revival. God's Spirit has visited here, and churches and communities have been changed. Could such a revival and visitation occur again today? This paper explores the history of the church in Maine and examines those historical factors that have prevented the church from ministering effectively today. It also examines a unique moment in the church's history, a statewide evangelistic crusade by evangelist Luis Palau in 1999 and the immediate and long-term impact of the crusade on the churches and communities of Maine. Finally, some conclusions are drawn regarding what the crusade taught the church about evangelism and renewal in New England today. The need for repentance, prayer, care for the poor and cooperative evangelism will be highlighted as the keys for effective evangelism that will bring about transformation of our New England communities in the years ahead."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131244994494464,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:25.664Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":9,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":1,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"C L Simmons","hits":1,"label":"C L Simmons"},{"value":"Carlton K Walker","hits":1,"label":"Carlton K Walker"},{"value":"David T Wood","hits":1,"label":"David T Wood"},{"value":"Edward M Eastman","hits":1,"label":"Edward M Eastman"},{"value":"Joel E Collier","hits":1,"label":"Joel E Collier"},{"value":"Keith A Blank","hits":1,"label":"Keith A Blank"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":1,"label":"Relation (Theology)"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Revivals","hits":10,"label":"Revivals"},{"value":"Church history","hits":4,"label":"Church history"},{"value":"Evangelistic work","hits":3,"label":"Evangelistic work"},{"value":"Christian life","hits":2,"label":"Christian life"},{"value":"Church renewal","hits":2,"label":"Church renewal"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Biblical teaching","hits":2,"label":"Spiritual life--Biblical teaching"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":4,"label":"United States"},{"value":"China","hits":1,"label":"China"},{"value":"Great Britain","hits":1,"label":"Great Britain"},{"value":"Maine","hits":1,"label":"Maine"},{"value":"New England","hits":1,"label":"New England"},{"value":"New York (State)--New York","hits":1,"label":"New York (State)--New York"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":10,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":10,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":10,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2007","hits":3,"label":"2007"},{"value":"2009","hits":2,"label":"2009"},{"value":"2012","hits":2,"label":"2012"},{"value":"2001","hits":1,"label":"2001"},{"value":"2004","hits":1,"label":"2004"},{"value":"2006","hits":1,"label":"2006"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":10,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":10,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":10,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":10,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":10,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
